Diego Luna was born in a theater in Mexico City. His father, Alejandro Luna, designed the sets where the boy learned to walk before he knew Hollywood existed. At eight years old, he was already in front of a camera for the short film El último fin de año.
In 1992 the telenovela El abuelo y yo gave him local fame that could have trapped him forever. But his encounter with Alfonso Cuarón in 2001 changed the course of his life. Y Tu Mamá También was not just a teen road-trip movie. It was the passport that carried a generation of Mexican filmmakers into the global market.
But the plan was different.
Luna soon understood that the studio system could devour his identity if he didn't keep one foot in independent production. In 2008, he played Jack Lira in Milk under the direction of Gus Van Sant. That supporting role confirmed that his résumé could hold its own alongside names like Sean Penn.
Arriving in Los Angeles was not the end of the road. In 2010, he decided he wanted to step behind the camera and directed Abel, a raw story about childhood that premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. He wasn't chasing easy applause from commercial cinema. He wanted to explore the cracks in the Mexican family with an almost surgical perspective.
Creative control was his true goal.
The industry claimed him for the Star Wars universe in 2016 with Rogue One. Playing Cassian Andor meant a massive jump in his international visibility. That cynical, desperate spy stood apart from the spotless heroes of the original saga. And audiences connected with that moral grit.
In 2022 he returned to the role for the series Andor on Disney+. He didn't limit himself to acting, serving as executive producer to ensure the show had the tone of a dry political thriller. Production of the second season ran until 2024 to complete a twenty-four-episode narrative arc in total.
Together with Gael García Bernal, he founded the production company La Corriente del Golfo in 2018. The goal was to create content from Mexico with global reach without losing control of the story. In 2024 they premiered the series La Máquina, where they once again shared the screen after years of projects separated by the geography of their careers.
Financial independence backs his artistic decisions.
That's because Luna prefers to alternate between theater in Mexico City and red carpets in London. In 2023 he starred in the play Cada vez nos despedimos mejor, a monologue that demanded exhausting physical presence. That's how he stays connected to the roots of his craft while managing contracts worth millions of dollars.
La Corriente del Golfo operates with offices in Mexico City and has a permanent staff of fewer than twenty people to manage its global projects.
