Dominique McElligott was born in Dublin in 1986 and grew up in a family with nothing to do with show business. She began acting while still in high school because she needed a creative outlet. In 2001, she landed her first professional role in the Irish series On Home Ground, where she played Cora Collins.
That shoot in rural Ireland taught her that acting has little glamour and a lot of waiting. But she made the most of every minute, observing the work of the lighting technicians. Before turning twenty, she already knew her place was in front of the camera, not on the boards of a theater stage.
And the gamble paid off.
Her breakout into international film came in 2009 with Moon. In this science fiction film directed by Duncan Jones, she played Sam Rockwell's wife. She appeared on screen for only a few minutes, but her presence was the emotional engine of the entire plot. That role opened doors to casting agencies in the United States without her having to move to Los Angeles right away.
In 2011, McElligott moved to the Alberta plains to shoot Hell on Wheels. For two seasons, she brought Lily Bell to life in a hostile setting of cowboys and railroad tracks. The writers decided to write her character out in 2012, which was an unexpected blow to AMC series fans.
After a brief stint in The Guard in 2011, she decided to try her luck in political drama. In 2016, she joined the cast of House of Cards to play Hannah Conway. Her role was that of the perfect wife of a presidential candidate, but she gave her an icy ambition that unsettled viewers.
She never sought the easy approval of the audience.
In 2017, she starred in The Last Tycoon, based on the work of F. Scott Fitzgerald. The series was canceled after just nine episodes due to the high production costs of the era. McElligott played Kathleen Moore, and critics praised her ability to hold an American accent flawlessly throughout the entire series.
In 2019, her career took a different turn with the premiere of The Boys. Playing Queen Maeve required grueling physical training that began months before arriving on set in Toronto. The character was a dark parody of heroic myths, steeped in alcoholism and utter disillusionment.
For three seasons, she maintained a difficult balance between cruelty and redemption. Her salary per episode increased significantly as the show gained fans around the world. But she kept her usual low profile and rarely gave promotional interviews outside the contractually required circuits.
There was no trace of her on social media.
In 2022, she decided to end her run on the Amazon series. She left voluntarily to pursue projects with fewer visual effects and more dialogue-driven roles. Filming her final scene in the season three finale took fourteen consecutive hours on a set kept at a chilly fifty degrees.
