Elisabeth Shue was not the typical pretty face of the 1980s. She had a square jaw and a stare that suggested she could beat you in an arm-wrestling match. Before stepping onto a set, she was a competitive gymnast, and that discipline shaped how she approached the industry.
Her film career was an advertising accident.
She started out filming commercials for Burger King and Hellmann’s to pay for her studies. In 1984, she made her big-screen debut in The Karate Kid. She played Ali Mills, and overnight her face was on the binders of high schoolers across the United States.
But she didn't want to be just the hero's girlfriend. While filming box office hits, she was still enrolled at Harvard to finish her degree in political science. That balance between the young star and the brilliant college student defined her first years in California.
In 1987, she starred in Adventures in Babysitting. It was her first major leading role, and the industry tried to typecast her as the perfect, responsible girl. She shot Cocktail with Tom Cruise in 1988 and replaced Claudia Wells in the Back to the Future sequels in 1989 and 1990.
Harvard could wait.
In the early nineties, her career seemed stuck in supporting roles that didn't make use of her physical strength. So in 1995, she made a drastic decision. She accepted the role of Sera in Leaving Las Vegas for a salary of just $30,000.
The film was shot almost clandestinely on 16mm because they had no money for permits to film on the streets of Las Vegas. Shue played a prostitute with a rawness nobody expected from the girl from The Karate Kid.
That role earned her an Oscar nomination for Best Actress.
And the gamble paid off.
From then on, she tried to balance commercial films with more personal projects. In 1997, she starred in The Saint alongside Val Kilmer, and in 2000 she worked under Paul Verhoeven in Hollow Man. But the Hollywood studio system didn't always know what to do with a woman who preferred naturalness to artifice.
In 2012, she joined the cast of the series CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. Replacing Marg Helgenberger was no easy task on a show that had already been on the air for twelve seasons. She stayed with the series until 2015, playing Julie Finlay with a technical composure far removed from her early days.
In 2019, she appeared in The Boys as Madelyn Stillwell. It was a cold, violent comeback that caught many by surprise. Her character was a ruthless executive who controlled corrupt superheroes in a dark satire about corporate power.
In 2021, she returned to the universe that made her famous. She appeared in two episodes of the third season of Cobra Kai to close the story of her original character after thirty-seven years. It was a nostalgic move, but executed with a restraint that avoided the cheap sentimentality of similar comebacks.
That same year, she worked on the series On the Verge, created by Julie Delpy. The production had a technical crew made up mostly of women. The series was canceled by Netflix after a single season of twelve episodes.
