Glenn Close didn't step onto a film set until age 35. Before that, she spent much of her youth trapped in the Moral Rearmament, a cult-like group that controlled every aspect of her life and movements. She escaped at age 22 to study theater and anthropology in Virginia because she needed to understand who she was outside that rigid environment.
It took a decade to convince the industry that her face worked on the big screen.
Her commercial breakthrough came in 1982 with The World According to Garp. That role as a feminist mother earned her first Oscar nomination and broke the age barrier that often penalizes women in Hollywood. And she did it without going through the ingenue roles that defined the early careers of nearly all her generation's peers.
What came next was a statistical run that's almost impossible to repeat. Between 1982 and 1988, she earned five Academy Award nominations for radically different roles. None of those nominations ended in a win, a fact that began to build her legend as the eternal contender against the studio system.
In 1987, her role as Alex Forrest changed public perception of her ability to carry dramatic tension. Filming Fatal Attraction was physically exhausting. Close pushed for changes to the original script so that her character wasn't just a textbook psycho. She wanted audiences to understand her desperation.
The actress decided to keep the prop knife used in the final scene. She has it framed in her Connecticut home as a war trophy from that shoot, which nearly cost her her mental health. For her, acting has always been an exercise in absolute possession of the character.
In the nineties, she decided it was time to secure her financial independence. She played Cruella de Vil in One Hundred and One Dalmatians in 1996 after negotiating a contract that let her keep all the costumes from the shoot. It was a masterful move in personal asset management.
She took home more than eighty haute couture pieces designed by Anthony Powell.
Television gave her the respect that film began to ration at the turn of the new century. In 2007 she took the role of attorney Patty Hewes in the series Damages. The show ran for five seasons and let her explore the amorality of power with a freedom she didn't find in the scripts of the major Los Angeles studios.
She won two Emmy Awards for that work before making another run at the Oscar with Albert Nobbs in 2011. It was a personal passion project she produced and financed herself after years of development. But the statuette eluded her again on gala night.
And the story repeated itself years later.
In 2018, her performance in The Good Wife seemed like the one to break her losing streak. She lost to Olivia Colman in one of the most talked-about surprises in the industry in the last decade. Close responded with a professional smile that photographers captured from every possible angle.
In 2020 she appeared in Hillbilly Elegy under the direction of Ron Howard and added her eighth unsuccessful nomination. By 2024, she was working on the thriller The Deliverance, and in 2025 her casting in Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery was confirmed. She owns three Tony Awards and three Golden Globes in her private collection. In 2024, her net worth exceeded $50 million after five decades of uninterrupted professional activity.
