Bruce Campbell was born in Royal Oak in 1958 and spent his teenage years wrecking Super 8 cameras in backyards across Michigan.
He wasn't after the prestige of academy awards or the million-dollar contracts of the major Los Angeles studios. His career was built on a high school friendship with director Sam Raimi and the idea that horror films could be as fun as they were painful to shoot.
In 1979, the team behind The Evil Dead holed up in a Tennessee cabin with a budget that wouldn’t cover catering for a big-budget movie today. Campbell endured 12-hour makeup sessions and was drenched in gallons of red-dyed corn syrup.
That shoot was a real physical ordeal.
The movie found success in international markets before it did in the U.S. because Stephen King wrote an enthusiastic review that saved its distribution deal. And so Ash Williams was born: an antihero who combined the charisma of old Hollywood stars with the clumsiness of a cartoon character.
Campbell reprised the role in 1987 with Evil Dead II and in 1992 with Army of Darkness. For the latter, the budget rose to $11 million, but box office earnings barely covered the production costs.
During the 1990s, Campbell focused on productions other actors avoided for fear of being typecast. But he understood that the home video market offered creative freedom that the studio system often stifled.
He starred in The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr. in 1993 for the Fox network, an attempt to mix western and science fiction. The series lasted only one season despite a budget of one million dollars per episode.
His prominent jaw and gift for physical comedy helped him move into television with supporting roles that often overshadowed the leads. In 2007, he joined the cast of Burn Notice playing Sam Axe, a former Navy SEAL who spent his days drinking mojitos in Miami.
He never turned his back on his most loyal fans.
He published his first autobiography, titled If Chins Could Kill: Confessions of a B Movie Actor, in 2001, and it reached the New York Times best-seller list. In its pages, he explained that it's better to be a big fish in a small pond than a forgettable face in a summer blockbuster.
In 2002, he played an older version of Elvis Presley in Bubba Ho-Tep (in which the singer battles a mummy at a nursing home). The movie was made for less than $1 million and quickly became a cult favorite on the festival circuit.
In 2015, he revived his most famous character for the series Ash vs Evil Dead, produced by the Starz network. The show ran for three seasons and ended in 2018 when the actor announced he was physically retiring from playing Ash due to the toll of the action scenes.
He then moved into an executive producer role and oversaw the revival of the franchise with Evil Dead Rise in 2023. The film grossed over $140 million worldwide on a budget of $15 million.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2024, he appeared in the series Hysteria!, playing Police Chief Dandridge in a story set during the Satanic Panic of the 1980s. The production was filmed in Atlanta under the direction of Jordan Vogt-Roberts.
Campbell has lived on a farm in Oregon since the late 1990s, far from the California entertainment industry. In 2025, his estimated net worth was around $10 million, derived mainly from image rights and fan conventions.
