Synopsis of Hercules: The Legendary Journeys

Zeus, king of the gods, takes human form to seduce Alcmena, a beautiful young woman, and deceives his wife Hera. From the affair is born a half-god, half-mortal baby with unmatched strength: Hercules. Jealous, Hera torments the boy from childhood, but Zeus protects him from birth. Hercules grows up without his father and has always wanted to meet him. As an adult, he travels through a version of ancient Greece set in an unclear historical period, where Eastern, Egyptian and medieval elements appear. He is accompanied by his friend Iolaus, played by Michael Hurst, and together they defend humble villagers from monsters, warlords and the selfish whims of the gods. Kevin Sorbo stars in this series created by Christian Williams, where adventure mixes with humor and nods to modern issues.

Trivia about Hercules: The Legendary Journeys

Executive producers Robert Tapert and Sam Raimi felt Kevin Sorbo was exactly the kind of "Joe Montana" they had envisioned for the role, and they hired him in late 1993.
The series was shot in a national park in New Zealand and began as a TV movie that became five made-for-TV movies in 1994.
A spin-off called The King of Thieves was scrapped because Bruce Campbell did not want to move to New Zealand, so the character appeared only occasionally in the first two seasons.
The series was canceled midway through filming the sixth season, with only eight more episodes produced after Sorbo initially refused to renew a three-year contract.
At the time, it was one of the most-watched syndicated series in the world, and it led to action figures and other merchandise.
Following the series' success, Cleopatra 2525, a science fiction series, was produced.
Lucy Lawless was a last-minute replacement for the actress originally cast as Xena, who fell ill before filming; Robert Tapert suggested Lawless, and the actress dyed her hair to play the role.
