James Eugene Carrey slept in a Volkswagen van parked in different parks across Ontario because his family had lost everything. He was fifteen and cleaned factories at night to help pay the bills. That pent-up rage eventually came out through his mouth in the form of impossible faces at comedy clubs in Toronto.

His arrival in Los Angeles was not the bed of roses that authorized biographies describe. He spent years refining an exhausting physical style that many critics called irritating. But in 1990 he joined the cast of In Living Color, and American audiences discovered that this Canadian could dislocate his jaw to make people laugh.

That was no coincidence.

1994 was the year that defied every statistical logic in the film industry. He released Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, The Mask and Dumb and Dumber. No one had ever scored **three worldwide box office hits in just twelve months** starting from virtually complete anonymity. Studios realized that his face was a money-printing machine.

The salary that broke the market

In 1996, he starred in Dumb and Dumber under the direction of Ben Stiller. It was the first time an actor earned 20 million dollars for a single movie. The trade press was outraged, but the figure set the template for the star contracts of the following decade. Carrey's humor grew darker, and critics began turning their backs on him for the first time.

And then came the real risk.

In 1998 he decided that easy laughs were no longer enough to fill his creative void. To film The Truman Show, he **gave up his usual salary** and accepted $12 million in exchange for proving that his gaze could express something more than cartoon-like elasticity. Peter Weir trusted him to bring to life a man whose life was a reality show without his knowing it.

But the industry never got around to giving him the Oscar he so badly wanted for Man on the Moon in 1999. He immersed himself so deeply in the role of Andy Kaufman that the crew was left exhausted by his eccentricities. He didn't leave the character even when the cameras were off. That effort earned him a Golden Globe, but the Academy didn't even nominate him.

Nobody could stop him.

A refuge in the paintbrushes

After the release of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind in 2004, his work pace voluntarily began to slow down. Michel Gondry's film is considered by many to be his best work because it explores the sadness of heartbreak without relying on a single physical gag. From then on, his on-screen appearances became more selective and strange.

In 2018 he returned to television with the series Kidding, in which he played a children's TV host sunk in deep depression. Critics praised the fragility of his performance. But Carrey was already more interested in his art studio than in the Hollywood spotlight. He began posting very aggressive political cartoons on his social media and devoting six hours a day to oil painting.

In 2020 he accepted the role of villain Dr. Robotnik in Sonic the Hedgehog. The success of the film led to the sequel's release in 2022 and the franchise's third installment in December 2024. While promoting the second film in 2022, he said he had enough footage shot and that he intended to **retire from acting for good** unless a script written in gold letters showed up.

So the actor remains firmly in his creative isolation. His last confirmed big-screen appearance came in the winter of 2024 with the closing chapter of the blue hedgehog trilogy. He currently spends most of his time at his Los Angeles property dedicated to visual art production.

His films have grossed over **$4,800 million** worldwide.
