Sofia Coppola grew up among cables and clapperboards, but her real debut was a national trauma in the United States. The year was 1990 when she replaced Winona Ryder in The Godfather Part III. The press was merciless about her lack of acting experience.
That public humiliation forged a filmmaker who prefers silence to exposure. She decided her place was behind the camera. And she did it without asking the major Hollywood studios for permission.
In 1999, she presented The Virgin Suicides and the world understood that her gaze was different. She was not after her father's epic grandeur. She preferred teenage boredom and the diffused light of summer afternoons.
And the gamble paid off.
She turned a story about teen suicide into a velvet dream. The film cost just $6 million and raised enough to give her complete creative freedom. Her visual style was already there.
In 2003, she received industry recognition with Lost in Translation. She wrote the screenplay with Bill Murray exclusively in mind. It took her months to persuade him, since the actor has no agent and only responds to an answering machine.
The film won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay in 2004. That shoot in Tokyo captured urban loneliness in a way no one expected from such a young director. She was the third woman in history nominated for Best Director by the Academy.
But the road was not always easy. In 2006, she premiered Marie Antoinette at the Cannes Film Festival and was booed during the press screening. French critics did not forgive the Converse sneakers and post-punk soundtrack in an 18th-century palace.
Cannes does not always forgive.
Despite the media noise, the film became an aesthetic reference point for the fashion world. Coppola showed that she was more interested in the isolation of her characters than in the rigor of history books.
In 2010, she won the Golden Lion in Venice for Somewhere. It is a film where very little happens. A famous actor lives at the Chateau Marmont hotel and watches his daughters do synchronized swimming.
Many critics accused her of only talking about the problems of rich people. But she has never hidden her privileged background. In 2017, she shot Marie Antoinette...
In 2023, she returned to biopics with Priscilla. Instead of focusing on the figure of Elvis Presley, she chose to tell the story from the room of the woman who lived in his shadow. The production had a budget of $20 million and was shot in just 30 days.
Her films steer clear of spoon-feeding the audience. She prefers to let the camera linger on objects, the textures of clothing, and the actresses' subtle gestures.
In 2024, Apple TV+ canceled production of the series The Custom of the Country on an estimated budget of $200 million.
