Chris Penn didn't need to raise his voice to be intimidating. He had the build of a retired boxer, moving with an odd agility. In 1983 he made his debut in Rumble Fish under the direction of Francis Ford Coppola. He wasn't the handsome one in the family. But his physical presence filled the frame effortlessly.
He had a raw, animal instinct.
In 1984 he appeared in Footloose. It was one of the few times we saw him dance on screen. But film noir was his natural habitat. So when Quentin Tarantino called him for Reservoir Dogs in 1992, everything fell into place. His portrayal of Eddie Cabot defined a modern style of tough guy.
He wore a blue tracksuit and a barely contained bad temper. That role gave him a visibility his brother Sean already had. But Chris played in a different league. He was the supporting player who could steal the scene from anyone without breaking a sweat.
In 1993 he worked on True Romance. He played a cop alongside Tom Sizemore. These were the golden years of American independent film. And Chris Penn was everywhere. Because his tough-guy face hid a fragility that few directors knew how to exploit.
Abel Ferrara was one of them.
In 1996 he shot The Funeral. It was his best work. He played a gangster tormented by the death of his younger brother. He won the Volpi Cup for Best Supporting Actor at the Venice Film Festival. That award confirmed he was more than just the brother of a star.
But the pace of work began to take its toll. His physique changed dramatically. In 2001 he appeared in Corky Romano. He started accepting roles in minor comedies. And the industry began to look at him differently.
In 2004 he lent his voice to the video game Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. He played Officer Eddie Pulaski. It was a massive sales hit. But his health had already deteriorated badly from being overweight and substance use.
There were no glamorous goodbyes.
In 2006 he filmed The Darwin Awards. It was his final appearance on the big screen. On January 24 of that same year, he was found dead in his Santa Monica apartment. He was 40 years old. The autopsy revealed nonspecific cardiomyopathy. The forensic report detailed that his heart weighed 700 grams.
