Laura Fraser was born in Glasgow in the autumn of 1975. The daughter of a screenwriter and a nurse, her entry into acting was anything but mystical. She studied at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland because it was the practical route out of her hometown's local stages.
She made her film debut in Small Faces in 1996. That shoot taught her that the camera demanded a restraint that theatre sometimes didn't. Shortly afterward came the series Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman, where she began to get familiar with fantasy genre shoots.
It wasn't all smooth sailing in London.
In 2001, she played Kate in A Knight's Tale. It was her first real contact with the machinery of major American studios, and that production gave her the chance to work alongside Heath Ledger on a project that aimed to break away from the tone of traditional period films. Fraser never quite fit the mold of the conventional movie star and preferred to keep a low profile away from the sets.
That same year, she appeared in Vanilla Sky and returned to smaller British productions. She worked on Casanova for 2005 and on the series Talk to Me in 2007. Her ability to convey inner tension without moving a single muscle in her face began to be her most distinctive trait.
The call for the Vince Gilligan universe changed her career in 2012.
She joined Breaking Bad to play Lydia Rodarte-Quayle in the final stretch of the series. She built a character defined by anxiety, obsessive order and an unsettling corporate coldness. Fraser had to learn German for her scenes at the Madrigal headquarters and made a villain in a business suit as feared as any drug lord in the desert.
She reprised the role in Better Call Saul between 2017 and 2022. This second stint allowed her to dig deeper into Lydia's fears and cemented her standing in American television. But the actress didn't stay in New Mexico and kept alternating projects on both sides of the Atlantic.
In 2016 she starred in The Missing, and in 2019 she headed the forensic series Traces. Fraser prefers complex characters over flat heroines. During 2021 she shot The Pact, a thriller in which the weight of a secret falls on a group of women working at a brewery.
The British market remains her main refuge.
She played Inspector Alice Hardy in the series Crime during 2021 and its second season in 2023. The show adapts Irvine Welsh's work and brings it back to the streets of Scotland with a gritty, realistic tone. The series was shot entirely on location in Glasgow and Edinburgh under the direction of David Blair and James Strong.
The production of the second season of Crime had a tight budget and was completed in the last quarter of 2023.
