A man wearing a prosthetic mask sits in an interrogation room. His name is David Aames, and he tells his story to forensic psychologist Curtis McCabe, who listens closely and takes notes as David decides where to begin. What he wants is to recount his entire life, without shortcuts, to someone who will have to evaluate it. That account, framed as a confession, is the thread the film follows. Vanilla Sky is directed by Cameron Crowe and stars Tom Cruise as David, while Kurt Russell plays Dr. McCabe. The opening leaves open the question of what the protagonist remembers and what the viewer begins to suspect, without explaining anything yet.

On November 12, 2000, the Times Square scene with an empty street was filmed in the early hours of the morning, with much of the traffic blocked off around the square.

Crowe deliberately kept shots of the World Trade Center, including those filmed after the September 11 attacks, as a tribute.

Nancy Wilson spent nine months on the film's music, which was created through experiments with sound collages.

In the murder and sex scene, Crowe used the spoken voice of Brian Wilson, taken from a mixing session for Pet Sounds.

The original soundtrack was released as an album to qualify for the Oscars and was never sold to the public.

Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave it a D− on a scale from A to F.
