Synopsis of My Name Is Earl

Earl Hickey is a small-time criminal who lives in Camden, a fictional county in rural America. His life is full of bad decisions, until he wins 100,000 dollars in the lottery with a ticket bought with stolen money. While he celebrates his luck, a car hits him and the winning ticket flies away. Recovering in the hospital, Earl discovers karma through a talk show hosted by Carson Daly and becomes convinced he must change his ways to be happy. He decides to surrender to the power of karma and writes a list of all the bad things he has done, intending to make up for them one by one. Created by Greg Garcia and aired on NBC, the series stars Jason Lee, Ethan Suplee and Jaime Pressly.

Trivia about My Name Is Earl

By the time the third episode aired, the series was already the highest-rated new fall show on NBC, and a full season of 22 episodes was ordered.

Jason Lee turned down the series twice, because he had no interest in working in television, until he agreed to read the script for the pilot.

The pilot episode won Emmy Awards for Outstanding Directing and Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series, and Jaime Pressly received the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress.

In 2008, Alec Baldwin publicly identified Greg Garcia as a Scientologist, and Garcia immediately denied any connection to Scientology.

The premiere of "My Name Is Earl" drew 14.9 million viewers in the United States and earned a 6.6 rating.

NBC canceled the series on May 19, 2009, after four seasons and 96 episodes, without producing a fifth season.

Jason Lee said the cancellation was unexpectedly communicated to the crew during filming, and that the fourth season finale ended on a cliffhanger because a renewal was expected.

In 2013, Greg Garcia explained during a Q&A session that he had planned to continue the story after the cancellation, but never got the chance to develop that continuation.
