Billy Gardell is not a lab creation or a face sculpted by a talent agent on Sunset Boulevard. His story begins in the comedy clubs of Pittsburgh in the late 1980s. There, he worked cleaning bathrooms and setting up chairs before he was allowed to step up to an open mic.
In 1987, Gardell took the stage for the first time after a bet with his coworkers. He was eighteen years old and had a blunt style that connected with Pennsylvania's working class. Comedy was his way of escaping a childhood marked by his parents' divorce and constant moves between Florida and Pennsylvania.
The stage never lies.
For two decades, he traveled the highways of the United States, sleeping in cheap motels and performing in second-rate venues. But that stretch of constant touring helped him hone a comedic rhythm that would later attract major producers in Los Angeles. In 2000, he landed his first significant role on the series Yes, Dear, where he played Billy Colavita.
In 2010, Gardell's life took a major administrative and financial turn. Chuck Lorre was looking for an everyday guy to star in a romantic comedy about two people who meet in a Overeaters Anonymous group. The project was titled Mike & Molly, and his co-star was then-unknown Melissa McCarthy.
The chemistry between them drove the production for six full seasons. Gardell played Mike Biggs, a Chicago police officer with a huge heart and constant insecurity. The series reached 13 million viewers at its highest peak audiences between 2011 and 2012.
And the gamble paid off.
But the end of the series in 2016 marked a moment of professional uncertainty. Gardell used that time to take on smaller projects and lend his voice to animated characters. In 2017, he played Colonel Tom Parker in the series Sun Records, a dramatic role that kept him away from the laugh tracks of the sitcom format for a while.
In 2019, Gardell returned to CBS with Bob Hearts Abishola. The premise centered on a Detroit sock company owner who falls in love with his Nigerian nurse after suffering a heart attack. It was a risky bet on cultural clash and the use of subtitles on a general network.
During the filming of this series in 2022, Gardell made a drastic decision for health reasons. He underwent bariatric surgery and radically changed his eating habits after years of struggling with type 2 diabetes. He lost more than 70 kilograms between the third and fourth seasons of the production.
This physical change forced the writers to work the weight loss into the character's storyline. Audiences noticed that the actor was no longer the heavyset man from the early episodes. The production had to constantly adjust Bob Wheeler's wardrobe over nearly two years of filming.
Filming of the fifth and final season wrapped up in early 2024. The series closed its run with a total of 115 episodes aired. Gardell now keeps a low profile, focusing on stand-up performances in Las Vegas and at select theaters. The series finale of Bob Hearts Abishola aired on May 13, 2024 and drew 5.41 million live viewers.
