Eddie Steeples never planned to be the face of an office supply chain. In 2004, he starred in an OfficeMax commercial dancing with rubber bands, and the impact was so absurd that People magazine included him among its sexiest men. That rhythmic dance immediately opened the doors of national television to him.
But before that, he spent years training at Howard University and at the Black Rep in St. Louis. Classical training often hides behind the physical comedy he brings to the screen. That mix of technique and charisma is what caught the attention of casting directors in Los Angeles.
Formal training is often the invisible foundation.
In 2005, he landed the role that fixed his face in the public memory. He played Darnell Turner in the comedy My Name Is Earl for 96 episodes. His character was under witness protection and looked after a turtle named Mr. Turtle while serving food at the Crab Shack.
Many actors disappear after a massive hit on television. Steeples chose to work on genre projects that moved away from pure situation comedy. He appeared in Torque in 2004 and in the thriller I Know Who Killed Me in 2007 alongside Lindsay Lohan.
And although critics tore that last film apart, he kept a steady work rate far from Hollywood's main spotlight. He wasn't chasing magazine covers or big events. He preferred the security of independent shoots, where creative control is greater.
He wasn't chasing easy fame.
In 2014, he appeared in The Guest, a cult film directed by Adam Wingard. He played Craig, a brief role that strengthened his presence in genre cinema with a much more serious and restrained tone. It was a deliberate choice to move away from the image of the "Rubberband Man."
Steeples started writing his own stories so he wouldn't depend on outside calls. In 2016, he co-wrote and starred in The 4th, a film that premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. It's a comedy about a 4 of July in Los Angeles that cost very little to produce.
The script worked because it addressed urban frustration without unnecessary frills. His ties to his Texan roots never fully broke, though. In 2021, he shot The Big Bend under the direction of Brett Wagner.
And the gamble paid off.
The film was shot in the desert region of Texas and explores the tension between two families in a hostile environment. During 2020, he took part in Jiu Jitsu alongside Nicolas Cage, an action and science fiction production filmed entirely in Cyprus with an estimated budget of $25 million.
