Shannen Doherty

The Stigma of the Bad Girl

Shannen Doherty never asked permission to be the boss of her own career. By 1990, her face was on every school binder in Spain and the United States alike. Playing Brenda Walsh in Beverly Hills, 90210 was a burden that few twenty-year-old actors could have carried with such composure.

The press of the day devoured her. Hate newsletters titled I Hate Brenda were published, and she responded with a defensive attitude that the industry punished for decades. But the talent was undeniable. Doherty earned $17,500 per episode at the start of the series, a figure that climbed quickly while her relationship with the rest of the cast deteriorated.

She departed in 1994.

Many people thought her career would end there. But Aaron Spelling recognized her magnetism and called her in 1998 to lead Charmed. At this stage, Doherty did more than act. She got involved in directing three key episodes and oversaw technical aspects that actresses in television usually had no access to.

And the result was a ratings hit.

Tensions on the set resurfaced, and she left the series in 2001. From that point on, she sought smaller projects and turned to independent films and TV movies. In 2008, she agreed to return to the universe that made her famous with 90210 for the CW network, although she appeared in only seven episodes of the first season.

Professional Resilience After the Diagnosis

The year 2015 brought a change in her personal life, but it didn't slow her production pace. Doherty decided to document her health journey while continuing to take roles in action and suspense films. In 2019, she filmed BH90210, a six-episode project in which the actors played fictionalized versions of themselves.

It was a risky decision.

She worked steadily in B-movie productions to secure her financial legacy. In 2021, she premiered List of a Lifetime and appeared in the action film Fortress alongside Bruce Willis. Her ability to handle physically demanding work impressed crews in Georgia and Puerto Rico with her punctuality on set.

In 2022, she filmed Hot Seat and Bomb Squad. Her last film appearance was in the action movie Darkness of Man, released in May 2024. She died on July 13, 2024 at her home in Malibu after a long battle with metastatic cancer. The costs of her medical treatment in her final years exceeded several hundred thousand dollars a year.
