Stan Ivar was born in Brooklyn in 1943. He entered the living rooms of millions of viewers when he played John Ingalls in the ninth season of Little House on the Prairie. That move in 1982 aimed to breathe new life into a series that was losing its original leads.
Ivar was the guy who got the job done.
Producers trusted his square jaw and calm gaze to fill the void left by Michael Landon. It wasn't an easy task (nobody wants to replace the patriarch), but his performance as a blacksmith with a large family fit the rural tone of the show.
After the series ended in 1983, he looked for fortune in commercial film. In 1985 he starred in Creature, a sci-fi film that tried to ride the wave of Alien. The movie was shot on a tight budget of less than a million dollars and is now studied as an example of modest practical effects.
During this period, the actor worked nonstop in television. He appeared in The Golden Girls and Remington Steele. His style wasn't geared toward absolute stardom. He preferred the security of the supporting actor who always has work at the studios of Los Angeles.
But film gave him another chance in 1988 with The Big Blue.
In Luc Besson, he played Raymond, a role that gave him work on a major international production. That gave him the lifeline he needed to survive the transition into the following decade.
The industry of the 1990s placed him in the world of long-running series. Ivar joined the cast of Days of Our Lives in 1994, bringing Daniel Scott to life. Productions like this demand a frantic shooting pace (sometimes one episode a day), and he showed remarkable physical stamina.
He shot more than sixty episodes in just one year of work.
Because the U.S. television market rewards reliability over sporadic brilliance. Ivar appeared on General Hospital and later on NCIS during the year 2004. He never lacked a call to play a soldier, a family father or a law enforcement officer.
Beyond his career in front of the spotlight, the actor founded Stan Ivar Productions. This decision aimed to gain real control over project rights and not depend solely on his agent's phone calls. In 1991, he appeared in the movie Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man alongside Mickey Rourke.
His screen presence became more selective at the turn of the century. In 2010 he provided voices for video game characters and worked on independent short films.
He wasn't chasing the red carpet.
His priority was longevity in a profession that often forgets its veterans quickly. Ivar's union record reflects constant activity over four decades of service in the California entertainment industry.
