Lou Wagner spent four hours a day stuck in a makeup chair during the filming of Planet of the Apes in 1968. He was only eighteen when he took on the role of Lucius. That latex mask not only hid his face from the general public, it also set his destiny in the Hollywood industry.
The spirit gum was unbearable under the Arizona sun on location. Wagner had to eat through straws and keep his jaw stiff so he wouldn't ruin the prosthetic. And the young Californian took on the challenge without knowing that his performance would stay in the memories of millions of viewers.
The mask was his only tool.
That role as a rebellious young chimpanzee let him work alongside Charlton Heston and Kim Hunter. But fame didn't come from his real face. In the following years he took on projects such as Hello, Dolly! in 1969, where he could show his true look before television steadily claimed his presence.
In 1978, Lou Wagner joined the cast of CHiPs to play Harlan Arliss. His character was the expert mechanic at the highway patrol garage. He didn't need motorcycle chases or shootouts to stand out on screen. His job was to deliver quick comebacks and provide a technical counterpoint to the leads.
He held that role for five years and more than eighty episodes. The financial stability of television allowed him to choose his film work more carefully. So he made the most of his small frame and his gift for physical comedy in genre productions of all kinds.
And audiences never forgot that friendly face from the garage.
Because Wagner understood early on that in Hollywood, supporting actors are the ones who truly hold the structure together. In 1980 he appeared in Gorp and kept hopping between light comedies and courtroom dramas. He never chased the spotlight because he preferred the security of a steady, recurring contract.
During the 1990s, his career took a different turn toward the recording booth. He voiced characters in The Snorkels and Family Guy. Voice work offered a longevity that physical appearance often loses with time.
But his connection to science fiction never fully faded. In 1993, he played DaiMon Solok, a Ferengi, in an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation. Years later, he returned to the franchise in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, playing a character named Maihar'du.
And it worked.
In 2017, he was part of the cast of the film The Last Word alongside Shirley MacLaine. His appearances became more selective, but he stayed busy at classic film conventions, where fans of the Apes franchise keep asking him for autographs on photos from 1968. In 2020, he appeared in an episode of the comedy The Goldbergs, playing a man named Arnie.
Lou Wagner lives in Southern California and has been a member of the actors' union for more than five decades.
