Marc Lawrence was born in Brooklyn and studied law at New York University. But he never practiced law in a conventional way. He preferred to use his gift for argument to write jokes for television in the 1980s.
In 1984 he joined the writing staff of Family Ties. There he learned that a good one-liner is worth more than a complicated plot twist. That series gave him the experience he needed to understand the rhythm of American mainstream comedy before moving on to feature films.
And the gamble paid off.
During that stage in television, he wrote dozens of episodes and began to refine a style built on urban characters who were somewhat neurotic and very quick with words. His scripts avoided unnecessary complications to focus on the chemistry between the actors.
Lawrence specialized in a type of movie that today seems on the verge of extinction. He wrote Miss Congeniality in 2000, focusing entirely on the charisma of Sandra Bullock. He made a premise about a beauty pageant gross more than $212 million at box offices around the world.
His professional relationships with Hollywood stars shaped his move into directing. In 2002, he premiered Two Weeks Notice. The film didn't aim to innovate visually, because Lawrence knew audiences paid to watch two attractive people bickering in a Manhattan penthouse.
He didn't need anything more.
But his most lasting partnership was with Hugh Grant. The British actor became his on-screen alter ego across four different feature films. Together they played up that mix of charming awkwardness and sarcasm that audiences loved in the early 2000s.
In 2007, they shot Music and Lyrics. Lawrence wrote some of the song lyrics himself because he wanted to control the exact tone of the ‘80s pop parody. The project was a financial success, bringing in $145 million on a modest budget.
Over the decades, mid-budget movies gradually disappeared from commercial theaters. Lawrence adapted to new distribution channels without changing his usual narrative structure. In 2014, he directed The Rewrite, using irony to explore the world of university teaching.
In 2019 he premiered Noelle directly on Disney+. It was one of the major original content bets for the service's launch in the United States. The production had an estimated cost of $60 million.
Filming on this latest holiday-themed movie officially wrapped on January 25, 2018 at studios in Vancouver.
