Cameron Diaz showed up to the audition for The Mask in 1994 without ever having acted before. She was twenty-one, working as a commercial model, but the producers needed a face that could handle the over-the-top antics of Jim Carrey. They had no idea they were hiring the woman who would dominate the global box office for the next two decades.
Her pay for that first movie was around $450,000. It was peanuts compared to what came next. In 1998, she accepted the lead role in There's Something About Mary and broke the mold of the Hollywood pretty girl by taking on gross-out comedy scenes that other actresses turned down out of fear of looking ridiculous.
The industry fell in love with her laugh.
That film grossed 369 million dollars worldwide. Diaz soon realized her value lay not just in her looks but in an innate gift for physical comedy reminiscent of silent film stars. But the real money was still to come with the turn of the millennium.
In the early 2000s, the Diaz name guaranteed automatic box-office returns for any studio. For Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle, released in 2003, she earned $20 million. She became the third woman in film history to reach that figure for a single role, after Julia Roberts and Reese Witherspoon.
Nobody missed her at auditions because she was no longer there.
During that period, she also voiced Princess Fiona in the Shrek franchise. It was a smart move that let her earn millions without going through hair and makeup. And while her bank account grew, her interest in the spotlight was starting to show signs of burnout.
After appearing in the musical Annie in 2014, she decided she no longer wanted to spend months away from home living in production trailers. She vanished from the radar of talent agencies without offering much explanation or any press statements. Her retirement lasted exactly ten years.
During her voluntary retirement, she founded Avaline in 2020. It's an organic wine brand that brought in millions in its first year without any need for red carpets. Diaz discovered she could build income outside of film sets, and only the personal determination of Jamie Foxx got her out of her home in California.
Her career went quiet until the right contract landed on the table.
In 2024, she finished filming Back in Action for Netflix. The shoot was grueling and ran far longer than planned due to logistical problems beyond the actress's control. The film cost roughly $100 million and marks her first film credit after a decade away from the screen entirely.
She accepted the project on her own terms for balancing family life. For Diaz, movies stopped being a vital necessity long ago. The production wrapped with a crew of more than two hundred people in the United Kingdom.
