Directed by Ridley Scott, the film follows a high-powered lawyer known only as Counselor, played by Michael Fassbender. He is in love with Laura, played by Penélope Cruz, and wants to marry her. To raise money quickly, he considers getting involved for the first time in a drug trafficking deal on the border between Texas and Mexico. The opening scenes show an intimate encounter between the two in bed. The story then moves to Mexico, where cocaine is packed into barrels and hidden in a sewage truck. The vehicle crosses the border and drops the merchandise off at a wastewater treatment plant on the other side, in US territory.

Trivia about The Counselor

The crew shot in Alicante and surrounding areas, and the border between the United States and Mexico was simulated at the Bardenas Reales (Navarre).

According to Ridley Scott, the cast was locked in two weeks, with names like Michael Fassbender, Brad Pitt, Javier Bardem, Penélope Cruz and Cameron Diaz, who he said were fighting for those roles.

Costume designer Paula Thomas dressed Malkina, the character played by Cameron Diaz, in about fifteen different outfits, while Giorgio Armani handled the wardrobe for Michael Fassbender and Penélope Cruz.

Daniel Pemberton recorded the soundtrack with a full orchestra at Abbey Road Studios and added noises and guitar textures recorded at home.

Critic Mark Kermode placed it second on his list of the ten worst films of 2013.

GQ exclusively premiered a short film directed by Johnny Hardstaff, in which Michael Fassbender buys lingerie from "the Blonde," played by Natalie Dormer.

The film earned approximately 71 million dollars worldwide against a 25 million budget, with less than 17 million coming from the United States and Canada.

Ridley Scott blamed the box office results, which fell short of his expectations, in 2017 on a marketing campaign that, in his view, revealed too much of the film and did not make enough use of the cast.
