Richard Cabral spent his twentieth birthday in solitary confinement. He was serving a thirteen-year sentence for armed robbery and had a record the Los Angeles police knew by heart. Back then, movies weren't on his radar, because his reality was limited to the walls of Folsom Prison and the hierarchy of Latino gangs.
But he was released early for good behavior. In 2006, he stepped out onto the street with his body covered in ink and a strange determination for someone who had only known the pavement. He turned to Homeboy Industries, an organization that helps young people leave gangs, and there someone saw that his face told a story Hollywood needed to buy.
There was no sign of cameras or scripts back then.
In 2009, he landed his first role on the series Southland. He didn't have to fake the accent or the defiant stare, because he came from that world. Producers were looking for authenticity, and Cabral delivered a truth that was uncomfortable by conventional television standards. His criminal past was his greatest asset in front of the camera.
His real breakthrough came in 2015 with the anthology series American Crime. He played Héctor Tontz, and his performance was so raw that the Television Academy nominated him for an Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor. It was a striking moment for the industry to see a former gang member on the red carpet competing with classically trained actors.
And the gamble paid off.
That role helped him break out of the mold of the silent background criminal. In 2016, he appeared in the film Blood Father alongside Mel Gibson and proved he could hold his own with major action movie stars. But Cabral didn't want to be just the tough guy with neck tattoos, so he started writing poetry to purge his own demons.
Television was no longer looking for just pretty faces.
In 2018, he joined the cast of Mayans M.C., the spin-off of Sons of Anarchy. For five seasons he brought Johnny “Coco” Cruz to life, and his character was one of the most complex in the storyline because of his addiction and family trauma. Filming for the series wrapped in 2023 after fifty episodes, in which Cabral brought a vulnerability that wasn't written into the original script.
Away from the spotlight, Cabral devotes his time to producing projects that explore redemption without cheap sentimentality. In 2019, he premiered the independent drama Lost Child, and in 2023 he appeared in the series Twisted Metal, playing Loud. He is an actor who chooses his projects based on the grit of the script rather than the final paycheck.
It was his first real contact with the industry.
In 2023, he also appeared in The Book of Clarence directed by Jeymes Samuel. This Legendary Entertainment production had a budget of 40 million dollars and was shot mainly on location in Italy to recreate biblical settings. Cabral played Judas Iscariot in a version that blended satire and historical drama.
The film was officially released in U.S. theaters on January 12, 2024.
