Watch your back. Every shift could be your last.

Brian Taylor and Mike Zavala are two Los Angeles Police Department officers patrolling South Central, an area with high crime rates. They are friends and partners on the same shift. Taylor, a Marine veteran, films their activities for a college project, despite complaints from other officers who aren't fond of the idea. A disturbance call takes them to the home of Tre, a man who hurls racist insults at Zavala, who is of Mexican descent. The two cops must decide how to respond to the provocation, while Taylor's camera keeps recording every move on the street.

Trivia about End of Watch

During his first ride-along with the police, Jake Gyllenhaal witnessed a murder during a drug raid while undercover in the back of an LAPD patrol car.

The movie grossed 41 million dollars in North America and 16.6 million in other territories, for a worldwide total of 57.6 million against a budget of 7 million.

Hispanic audiences made up 32% of the opening weekend audience in the United States, making the movie especially popular with them.

Jaime FitzSimons, a former LAPD officer and a longtime friend of Ayer, served as the film's technical advisor, and his experiences in Los Angeles inspired several plot points.

Most scenes were shot with four cameras at once: one handheld camera operated by Gyllenhaal, others mounted on the actors' vests, and a camera recording the dashboard of the patrol car.

As of 2022, Fox Entertainment was developing a TV series adaptation of the movie.

Over five months, Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Peña completed up to three weekly ride-alongs of twelve hours each with LAPD officers, the county sheriff's deputies, and the Inglewood police; Peña estimated they took about 40 trips together.
