Natalie Martinez didn't need to go to a conventional drama school to understand how a camera works. Her entry into the industry was a stroke of advertising luck when Jennifer Lopez chose her to be the face of his clothing line in 2002. That campaign took her out of Miami and put her straight onto the screens of casting directors in Los Angeles.
In 2008 she landed her first major film role with Death Race. She shared the screen with Jason Statham in a 45 million dollar production where her job was basically to survive explosions and hold her own in a hypermasculine environment. It was a literal trial by fire.
The industry pigeonholed her quickly.
In the years that followed she took on roles that capitalized on her Cuban heritage and athletic build. In 2012 she appeared in Sin tregua alongside Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Peña. That film by David Ayer demanded an almost documentary-style naturalism, and she responded with a restraint that many did not expect from a former model. The shoot used handheld cameras and a budget tight by Hollywood standards.
But looks weren't everything.
The real change of direction came on television. In 2015 she joined the cast of Kingdom to play Alicia Mendez. That series about mixed martial arts allowed her to explore a vulnerability that action cinema had until then denied her. She trained for months so that her movements in the cage would look credible to real fighting fans.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2017 she starred in The Crossing, and in 2019 she led the cast of The I-Land for Netflix. Not all of her productions received the same critical support, but her name began to appear regularly on the shooting schedules of the major platforms. Her ability to deliver dense dialogue in science fiction series made her a safe bet for producers looking for technical reliability.
In 2021 she took on a doubly complex role in Ordinary Joe. The series presented three different timelines, and she had to adjust her performance to three versions of the same woman. It was an exercise in acting precision that she filmed in Atlanta under an exhausting production schedule that left little room for rehearsal.
In 2024, she returned to her geographic roots with Bad Monkey. In this adaptation of Carl Hiaasen's novel, she plays a medical examiner who joins Vince Vaughn in a criminal plot set in the Florida Keys. The production took advantage of her familiarity with the terrain and her knack for dry humor. Filming stretched over several months at real locations in Miami and the surrounding area.
That same year she joined the cast of Landman. This series, created by Taylor Sheridan, centers on the world of oil platforms in Texas and marks a return to raw industrial drama. The project has a per-episode budget exceeding 10 million dollars due to the complexity of its outdoor locations.
Natalie Martinez has managed her career by avoiding major tabloid scandals and focusing on the day-to-day logistics of the work. She doesn't seek absolute spotlight on the red carpet. She prefers the security of a long-term contract on a cable series or streaming platform.
Her contract for the first season of Landman included a specific clause about the filming schedule in Fort Worth to optimize the travel costs of the crew.
