Synopsis of Gilligan's Island

A charter boat called the SS Minnow sets sail from Honolulu with two crew members and five passengers for what is billed as a "three-hour tour." Among the passengers are a Wall Street millionaire, a movie actress, a Kansas farmer's wife and a professor, along with the captain and first mate Gilligan, a clumsy sailor played by Bob Denver. A storm wrecks the vessel and everyone ends up on an uncharted desert island somewhere in the Pacific Ocean. Their goal is to get home, but rescue attempts repeatedly fail due to Gilligan's carelessness. Created by Sherwood Schwartz for CBS, the series explores how very different people must learn to live and cooperate in order to survive.

Trivia about Gilligan's Island

The last day of filming on the pilot was November 22, 1963, the same day President John F. Kennedy was assassinated, and the crew learned the news mid-morning, Hawaii time.

Jerry Van Dyke turned down the role of Gilligan because he believed the show would never succeed, and instead chose to star in My Mother the Car, which is considered one of the worst TV series of all time.

Schwartz wrote the role of Thurston Howell III with his close friend Jim Backus specifically in mind, but Backus was not immediately available, so CBS approved a budget increase to hire him.

Bob Denver demanded that studio executives add the names of the Professor and Mary Ann to the opening theme song, and threatened to have his own name removed as well if they didn't.

CBS canceled the show at the last minute, while the cast was on vacation, even though some actors had bought homes near the set counting on a renewal.

The unaired pilot starred John Gabriel as the Professor, but the character was recast before the series because CBS felt his performance didn't work with audiences.

Alan Hale Jr. was filming a movie in Utah when he got the call to audition for the Skipper. He rode a horse to a highway, hitchhiked to Las Vegas and flew to Los Angeles for the audition.

The first season used cups made from real coconuts, but they were replaced with ceramic replicas because the originals were porous and leaked.
