Ken Leung isn't the kind of actor who chases magazine covers. He was born in New York in 1970, and his studies at New York University (NYU) fueled a career that began far from the Hollywood spotlight. He studied acting with Catherine Russell and Nan Smithner before making the jump to the major leagues.
He spent years working the off-Broadway stages.
In 1998, he got his big commercial break with Rush Hour. He played Sang, a villain with an icy stare who held his own opposite Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker. That role put him on the radar of directors like Spike Lee, who soon called him to work on Sucka Free City in 2004.
Even before that, he had brief appearances in big-budget films. In 2001, he took part in A.I. Artificial Intelligence under the direction of Steven Spielberg. In 2006, he played Kid Omega in X-Men: The Last Stand, where his character shot spikes out of his face.
In 2007, he joined the cast of The Sopranos to play Carter Chong. It only took a few episodes for him to show that his controlled intensity worked perfectly in prestige dramas. His character was a patient with anger issues who shared key scenes with Junior Soprano in a mental institution.
That work convinced the creators of Lost.
In 2008, he made his debut on the island as Miles Straume. His character could talk to the dead and brought a dose of cynicism the show needed in its final seasons. He earned a salary that reflected his status as a cult actor on one of the most expensive productions in American television history.
Because Leung knows that silence says more than a scream. So during the three seasons he spent on ABC's series, he refined a minimalist acting style. He never tried to steal the scene from his co-stars, yet his presence was constant.
In 2020, he took on the role of Eric Tao in Industry. The HBO series exposes the inner workings of investment banking in London through ruthless characters. Leung plays a complex mentor who swings between paternal protection and the most brutal psychological abuse.
But it hasn't all been critical success.
In 2017, he joined Marvel's series Inhumans. The show was panned by the specialized press and canceled after a single season due to low ratings. That setback didn't slow his pace at all, and he soon returned to projects with stronger scripts.
In 2024, he brought Commander Zhao to life in Netflix's version of Avatar: The Last Airbender. For this role, he shot most of his scenes in front of giant LED screens in a state-of-the-art virtual production environment. The series hit No. 1 in more than 80 countries during its first week on air.
For logistical reasons, the production of the third season of Industry moved its base of operations from Cardiff to London in 2023.
