Kevin J. O'Connor doesn't have the face of a poster heartthrob, but he's the kind of actor every director wants on their supporting cast. He made his debut in 1986 with Peggy Sue Got Married, directed by Francis Ford Coppola. That early start in Chicago taught him that his place was on the edges of the scene.
Because his face is one you recognize even if you don't know his name.
His career is a catalog of oddities.
In 1999, he played Beni Gabor in The Mummy. It was the role that brought him global visibility, thanks to a mix of cowardice and dark humor that few actors can balance without slipping into parody. Stephen Sommers also cast him in Deep Rising and Van Helsing to exploit that sleazy but charismatic character the audience loves to hate.
But O'Connor didn't get stuck in the popcorn movies of the late nineties. And the gamble paid off.
Paul Thomas Anderson's casting for There Will Be Blood in 2007 marked a complete change of register. He played Henry (Daniel Plainview's supposed brother) in a restrained acting duel opposite Daniel Day-Lewis. It was a dry performance that contrasted with his earlier excesses.
Anderson called him back in 2012 for The Master. Working again with the California director is not something many actors manage in such a volatile industry. In that film he shared scenes with Joaquin Phoenix and Philip Seymour Hoffman while maintaining enviable intensity.
The numbers don't lie.
He has worked on more than sixty productions across film and television. In 2018 he appeared in Widows directed by Steve McQueen. In that film he played Bobby Welsh and proved that his physical presence remains a powerful storytelling tool despite the passage of time.
In 2023 he joined the cast of The Exorcist: Believer to play a key character in the exorcism storyline. The film grossed more than 136 million dollars at the global box office. O'Connor brought the veteran presence the franchise needed as it sought to recapture the tone of the 1970s original.
Before reaching that point, he spent long seasons on television series such as Chicago P.D. and The Beast. As a result, he knows the pace of work on network television well and the demands of shooting episodes on tight schedules.
He has never sought out the spotlight entirely.
O'Connor lives away from the spotlight of Los Angeles and keeps a low profile that allows him to keep working without the wear and tear of media fame. In 2024 his schedule continues to focus on independent projects and collaborations with directors who value his ability to improvise on set.
Filming The Mummy in Morocco took seventeen weeks and forced him to learn Arabic phrases he still remembers.
