Ambyr Childers was born in Arizona but grew up in Murrieta, under the California sun. At eighteen, she already had a steady contract on national television. She played Colby Chandler in more than 150 episodes of the series All My Children between 2006 and 2008.
That job was her intensive acting school. The discipline of soap operas taught her how production schedules work before she came of age. But Childers was looking for more than overwrought dialogue and cardboard sets.
In 2012, Paul Thomas Anderson called her to shoot The Master. It was not a leading role, but sharing the frame with Joaquin Phoenix and Philip Seymour Hoffman changed her perception of the craft. That experience allowed her to step away from conventional television work and move into prestige cinema.
And then the thrillers came.
Childers worked under Ruben Fleischer on Gangster Squad for 2013. That same year she appeared in 2 Guns alongside Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg. Childers proved she could hold her own with Hollywood's biggest stars without flinching in high-tension scenes.
In 2013 she also starred in We Are What We Are. This independent horror film premiered at the Cannes and Sundance film festivals. It was one of her most physically and emotionally demanding roles. International critics praised her ability to convey anguish without relying on big gestures.
Her role as Candace Stone in the series You brought her global visibility in 2018. The storyline cast her as the ex-girlfriend and survivor of a serial killer. The character was so compelling that the writers expanded her presence during the second season, which aired in 2019.
But the industry is fickle.
Between shoots, Childers chose to devote her time to creating a jewelry line inspired by her Native American roots. This business venture was born out of a need for creative control that casting calls did not always offer her. Ambyr Childers Jewelry became her financial and artistic refuge away from the spotlight.
In 2015 she starred in the sci-fi film Vice alongside Bruce Willis. The project did not have the box office impact it had hoped for and quickly moved to the home video market. The actress went back to focusing on supporting roles in long-running TV series such as Ray Donovan.
The actress's personal life made headlines in the American press between 2022 and 2023. Her divorce from producer Randall Emmett led to a complicated legal battle that affected her work schedule. Childers filed for legal protective orders that were a recurring story in Los Angeles media.
In 2022, she released the film Pinball: The Man Who Saved the Game. She played Ellen in an independent production that received positive reviews at several film festivals. It was a one-off return to the big screen after several years out of the media spotlight.
In December 2022, a California court granted her full joint custody of her two daughters under a strict visitation schedule.
