In May 2000, Curtis Jackson was shot nine times at point-blank range outside his grandmother's house in Queens. He survived with a bullet lodged in his jaw, and Columbia Records terminated his contract while he was still in the hospital. Three years later, he had sold twelve million copies of his official music debut.

Hollywood wasn't interested in his prison past, but it was interested in his ability to pull millions of buyers into theaters. Paramount Pictures saw the commercial opportunity and financed a project tailored to him, following the path Eminem had taken shortly before. In 2005, Get Rich or Die Tryin’ hit theaters under the direction of Jim Sheridan.

Critics tore the film apart.

Audiences responded with 46 million dollars at the box office, enough to cover production costs but far from the massive impact the studio had projected. That box office stumble taught him a lesson he would apply for the rest of his career: relying on the decisions of major studios was a bad business.

The Detour Into B-Movies and the Scale

For nearly a decade, Jackson financed and starred in modest productions aimed at the home video market. In 2008 he founded the production company Cheetah Vision with producer Randall Emmett, backed by a two-hundred-million-dollar credit line. He shot functional action tapes in which he shared footage with famous names to guarantee sales to international distributors.

In 2008 he shared the bill with Robert De Niro and Al Pacino in the police thriller Righteous Kill. But nobody paid attention to his dramatic work, because the industry typecast him as the dangerous guy in a bulletproof vest. For Hollywood, he was just a secondary draw with muscles and physical presence.

So he decided to push the machine to its physical limit.

In 2011 he lost 24 kilos through liquids and nine weeks of grueling exercise to play an athlete with cancer in All Things Fall Apart. The dramatic weight loss made headlines, but the film went under the radar at the box office.

Jackson then realized that traditional film would not give him the control he was looking for.

The Assault on Pay Cable

In 2014 he teamed up with screenwriter Courtney A. Kemp to launch Power on the subscription channel Starz. The project blended crime drama with a sophisticated visual style aimed at an urban audience that broadcast networks had ignored. Jackson served as executive producer and took on the role of Kanan Stark, a relentless criminal who reflected the street violence of his youth in New York.

Viewers' response drove the channel's subscriptions to levels unheard of for the network. In 2018, Jackson signed a general development deal with Starz worth 150 million dollars, one of the highest figures agreed to by an independent television producer that decade.

And the channel ended up depending entirely on its studio.

Three spin-offs came out of that series: Power Book II: Ghost in 2020, Power Book III: Raising Kanan in 2021, and Power Book IV: Force in 2022. The commercial formula was repeated in 2021 with BMF, focused on the rise of the drug trafficking organization Black Mafia Family in Detroit. The audience kept these shows at the top of the viewing charts on the network's streaming platform for years of continuous airing.

Home-grown output and war against the industry

In 2023 Jackson ended his contractual relationship with Starz after several public disagreements over broadcast schedules and budgets. He immediately signed a non-exclusive deal with Fox Entertainment to develop scripted series and animated projects through his company G-Unit Film & Television.

But the decisive move happened outside the Los Angeles studios. In 2024 he founded G-Unit Studios in Shreveport, Louisiana, after taking over the Millennium Studios facilities, nearly one million square feet of space for indoor shoots.

In 2026 the company closed a 50-million-dollar public incentive package with the state government to expand the complex on a total budget of 124 million. The agreement set a contractual obligation to reserve 70% of technical positions for state residents, backed by direct financial penalties.
