Max Thieriot is not your typical Los Angeles lab-made product. He was born in 1988 in Los Altos Hills, and his family had their name in newspaper headlines long before he learned to read. He is the great-grandson of Michael H. de Young, co-founder of the San Francisco Chronicle.
Despite that high-society California pedigree, his debut was anything but glamorous. In 2004 he made his big-screen debut in Catch That Kid alongside a very young Kristen Stewart. It was a leap into the unknown in a children's production that did well at the box office but didn't guarantee a long future in the industry.
A year later, he shared the screen with Vin Diesel in The Pacifier. It was 2005, and Thieriot was starting to be typecast as the rebellious teen of Disney's family comedies. But the actor had other plans for his career and began looking for scripts with more edge.
Nobody handed him a seat at the producers' table.
His shift in direction came with independent film and psychological thrillers. In 2009, he shot Chloe under the direction of Atom Egoyan. Sharing scenes with Julianne Moore and Liam Neeson pushed him to raise his technical standards. It was the moment critics stopped seeing him as a youthful face and began to regard him as a solid supporting actor.
The real transformation came in 2013. Thieriot took on the role of Dylan Massett in Bates Motel. He played Norman Bates's wayward brother across the show's five seasons. He managed to give humanity to a character who did not exist in Hitchcock's original film, and that gave him complete creative freedom.
And the gamble paid off.
During that period between 2013 and 2017, the actor learned to handle the pace of prestige television. But while others went after the lead in a romantic comedy, he was preparing physically for something far more demanding.
In 2017, Thieriot traded family drama for combat fatigues. He joined the cast of SEAL Team to bring Clay Spenser to life. The shoot demanded military-level physical training and a commitment of several months a year in extreme heat and humidity. He kept up this work pace for five full seasons before making the leap into content creation.
Because Max Thieriot wanted to tell his own stories. In 2022, he pitched the Fire Country project to CBS. The series did not come out of a city writers' room but from his own childhood memories in Northern California. It was inspired by the conservation program in which inmates fight wildfires in his home state.
The project was a financial and logistical gamble. Thieriot decided to star in the series under the name Bode Leone, and also served as executive producer and writer. In 2022, the series became one of the most-watched premieres on broadcast television in the United States.
Thieriot is a field type.
Away from the Hollywood spotlight, he runs his own winery in Sonoma County. He founded Senses Wines with two childhood friends he grew up among the vineyards with. They produce Pinot Noir and Chardonnay bottles that earn high scores from wine guides. In 2024, production from their land reached thousands of cases distributed across the country.
In 2023, the actor had to juggle directing episodes of his own series with the demands of a production that uses real fire in most of its sequences. The shoot moved to the wooded areas of Vancouver to cut production costs. The show's second season reportedly had a budget of over $3 million per episode.
