Janel Parrish took the stage at the Imperial Theatre in New York at age six. She played the young Cosette in Les Misérables. That production in 1996 gave her first real paycheck and cured her fear of the spotlight before she could do multiplication.
She was born in Oahu, Hawaii, and her heritage blends European and Chinese roots. But her ambitions were never limited to home. In 2003, she took part in the show Star Search and, although she didn't win the competition, she caught the attention of several casting agents on the West Coast.
In 2007, she broke into mainstream movies with Bratz.
The movie received scathing reviews and four Razzie Award nominations. But for a young woman trying to find her place in Los Angeles, the project was the necessary price of admission to the studio system. The industry quickly pigeonholed her as a teen actress and fast-turnaround entertainment.
The change came in 2010 with the role of Mona Vanderwaal in Pretty Little Liars. At first, her character was a supporting part that served as a social foil to the leads. But the writers noticed that Parrish handled ambiguity better than the rest of the young cast.
Mona was the engine of the chaos.
Over seven seasons, Parrish moved between the victim and the sociopathic villain. In 2012, the reveal of her identity as the show's first antagonist sparked a wave of social media conversation that outpaced far more established series. She won four consecutive awards at the Teen Choice Awards for this role.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2014, she tried her luck in reality TV on Dancing with the Stars. She finished third alongside Valentin Chmerkovskiy. That exposure helped her step out from the shadow of her most famous role and show a technical side her fans didn't know until then.
In 2018, Parrish signed on to play Margot Covey in the trilogy To All the Boys I've Loved Before. The first film drew millions of views on Netflix during its first month. It marked a shift toward understated storytelling and mid-budget family dramas.
In 2021, she closed out the saga with To All the Boys: Always and Forever. That same year, she starred in Coyote Creek Christmas for Hallmark Channel. It's a niche that often guarantees steady audiences and recurring contracts on American cable television, where viewership figures remain strong.
The theater was still there.
In 2023, she appeared in the comedy Family Switch alongside Jennifer Garner. It was a big-budget production in which Parrish played a supporting role that was nonetheless key to the dynamics of the second act. The movie hit the No. 1 spot globally on its streaming platform for two consecutive weeks.
In 2024, she joined the cast of the American version of The Traitors. The show was filmed at Ardross Castle, and Parrish was eliminated in the seventh episode after a vote by the conclave, which the players made for strategic reasons.
