The lawyer who broke the mold

Blair Underwood didn't need decades to understand how the industry worked. In 1985, he made his debut in Krush Groove with a role that barely scratched the surface of his potential. But his real breakthrough came two years later when he joined the cast of L.A. Law.

Jonathan Rollins was the character who changed the game for him. Seven consecutive Golden Globe nominations for the series confirmed that Underwood was more than just a pretty face in an expensive suit. Audiences connected with his mix of charisma and professional rigor.

Six seasons were enough to etch his face into the public's memory.

In the late 1990s, he turned to action films and courtroom dramas. In 1995, he shared the screen with Sean Connery in Just Cause, and a year later he got swept up in the frenzy of Set It Off. The actor avoided the supporting roles that Hollywood typically reserved for Black performers at the time.

And the strategy worked for a while.

He appeared in Deep Impact in 1998, playing an astronaut in a blockbuster that grossed $349 million worldwide. It was one of the few times commercial cinema allowed him to lead a project of that technical scale. But the industry is fickle, and leading roles began to dry up in favor of appearances in prestige series.

A Refuge on the Stage

Television gave him the money, but theater gave him back his respect.

In 2012, he took on the role of Stanley Kowalski in a Broadway production of A Streetcar Named Desire. It was a risky move, since the shadow of Marlon Brando always looms over that text. New York critics praised his restraint and his ability to step away from the TV heartthrob type that had followed him since the 1980s.

Before stepping onto the stage, Underwood spent hours studying Tennessee Williams's meter. His training at Carnegie Mellon was no mere decoration on his résumé. He applied that academic discipline to survive the eight weekly performances demanded by New York's commercial theater circuit.

In 2020, he returned to the stage in A Soldier's Play and earned a Tony Award nomination. This period coincided with his work on the miniseries Self Made, where he played Charles James Walker. The Netflix production explored the life of America's first self-made female millionaire and gave him the chance to work alongside Octavia Spencer.

Directing and New Horizons

Underwood decided he didn't want to wait for the phone to ring with outside offers. He founded his own production company to develop stories the system systematically ignored. His goal was to control the narrative and not depend on the passing whims of casting directors.

In 2009, he directed The Bridge to Nowhere. It was an independent drama shot in Pittsburgh that explored the world of drugs and desperate decisions. It wasn't a box office hit, but it showed the industry that Underwood knew the inner workings of the camera perfectly well.

And she never stopped working.

In 2023, he joined the cast of Origin under the direction of Ava DuVernay. The film examined the roots of social hierarchy based on Isabel Wilkerson's essay. It was a complex shoot that demanded absolute restraint in performance so as not to overshadow the political message of the work.

In 2024, he appeared in the horror film Longlegs alongside Nicolas Cage. The film, directed by Osgood Perkins, was shot in Vancouver with an estimated budget of $10 million. Underwood plays Agent Browning in this crime thriller that blends police suspense with elements of cult cinema.

The film opened its first weekend in the United States with box office earnings of over 22 million dollars.
