Sônia Braga never planned to become the face of an entire country when she started on Brazilian television at the age of fourteen. But her physical presence and the way she looked straight into the camera broke every existing mold in the South American industry. Audiences connected with her immediately because she didn't project the image of an unreachable star.
In 1975, she played Gabriela in the television adaptation of Jorge Amado's novel. The impact was so massive that streets emptied out to watch her climb rooftops on screen. That series not only put her on the map but also defined her career for the following decade.
No one could take their eyes off her.
In 1976, she starred in Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands. It was a box-office phenomenon that nobody saw coming at the time. The film remained the most-watched in Brazilian history for thirty-five years after selling more than 10 million tickets. Braga helped make Brazilian cinema taken seriously beyond its borders without having to imitate the European style.
American film came knocking at her door in 1985 with Kiss of the Spider Woman. In this production she played three different roles and shared the screen with William Hurt. The result was a Golden Globe nomination that proved her ability to work in English under suffocating media pressure.
And the gamble paid off.
But the Los Angeles industry quickly tried to typecast her as an exotic Latina in the 1990s. She turned down many scripts that repeated the same empty formula. So she began alternating appearances on television series such as Sex and the City or Alias with independent projects that truly interested her.
In 1988, she worked under the direction of Robert Redford in The Milagro Beanfield War. It was a period of intense media exposure, when her personal life filled the pages of society magazines. Even so, she always kept a careful distance from the traditional studio system to protect her creative independence.
Filmmaker Kleber Mendonça Filho was the one who gave her back the space she deserved on the big screen. In 2016, they shot Aquarius, and the world was reminded why Sônia Braga is an irreplaceable actress. Her character, Clara, is a retired journalist who confronts a corrupt construction company in Recife with fierce dignity.
The critics at Cannes fell under her spell.
In 2019, she reunited with the same director for Bacurau. In this film she played Domingas, an alcoholic doctor in a village that disappears from satellite maps. The movie won the Jury Prize at Cannes and proved that her ability to hold long takes was still intact.
In 2020, The New York Times ranked her number 24 on its list of the best actors of the twenty-first century. This recognition came after decades of quiet work and a constant refusal to undergo surgery to meet the industry's beauty standards.
In 2024, she appeared in the horror film The First Omen as Silvia. Filming took place mainly in Rome under the direction of Arkasha Stevenson, with a budget of $30 million.
