Bill Farmer didn't start his career surrounded by mice and ducks. In the 1970s, he made a living doing stand-up comedy in clubs in Kansas and Nevada, where he impersonated celebrities of the day. His ability to dissect sounds was innate. But Hollywood doesn't hand out opportunities just because you can do voices in a roadside bar.
In 1986, he decided it was time to take a chance and moved to Los Angeles with very little money. His agent got him an audition for Disney, which was desperately looking for a new voice for Goofy after years of failed tryouts. Farmer walked into the studio and simply let out that breathless, awkward gasp that we all have in our heads.
And it worked right away.
In 1987, Farmer signed his first contract with the studio and took on a responsibility that would scare anyone. He didn't just copy what others had done before. He studied the original 1930s cartoons to understand why Goofy moved the way he did and why his laugh always ended on a downward note.
But the real challenge came in 1995 with the release of A Goofy Movie. In this production, the character stopped being a simple comic relief and faced fatherhood and generational drama. Farmer had to find an emotional register that kept the cartoon's essence but sounded real for a father in trouble.
He managed to record more than 3,000 lines of dialogue for that project under suffocating pressure.
Betting on the character's humanity was an absolute success.
His filmography isn't just about dogs. Farmer has voiced Pluto and the horse Horace Horsecollar in dozens of productions, including Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and the video game series Kingdom Hearts. In 2009, the company named him a Disney Legend. He was the first voice actor to receive this honor while still active at the company.
His work outside the mouse house is just as technical, though less noisy. In 2014, he took part in the series The 7D as Doc, and in 2020 he premiered his own documentary show, It's a Dog's Life with Bill Farmer. Here he set fiction aside to show the real bond between humans and working animals.
Because his career has always revolved around dogs.
In 2021, he joined the cast of Mickey Mouse Funhouse to keep voicing his regular characters under new remote recording guidelines. Farmer records most of his lines from a private home studio to avoid unnecessary travel. His contract with Disney requires near-total vocal exclusivity for certain corporate events and theme parks.
Farmer has used a Neumann U87 microphone for most of his professional sessions for three decades.
