Scott Mosier met Kevin Smith at the Vancouver Film School in the early nineties. They had no money, but they shared a cynical sense of humor that fit the apathy of their generation. In 1994, they financed Clerks with credit cards and by selling comic book collections. Mosier not only produced the film. He also edited it and acted in it, playing several minor characters because there was no budget for extras.
It was the start of a partnership that lasted two decades.
For years, Mosier was the rational filter for his partner's antics. In 1997, they produced Chasing Amy on a budget of 250,000 dollars. The film grossed twelve million dollars in the United States. Mosier understood that independent film needed technical structure so it wouldn't get lost in endless dialogue. But his work went beyond numbers and contracts.
He edited Dogma in 1999, facing religious controversy and a complex edit that blended visual effects with neighborhood theology. The result was a work that challenged the labels of its era.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2001 Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back arrived. It was the peak of a way of doing business built on camaraderie and a controlled budget. Mosier balanced Smith's creative vision with the demands of studios that were starting to scrutinize his projects closely.
The professional relationship between the two naturally cooled after the release of Zack and Miri Make a Porno in 2008. Mosier was looking for other styles. In 2013, he produced the animated film Free Birds. It was a change of pace that took him definitively away from New Jersey convenience stores and into the major studios of Los Angeles.
In 2018, he made his definitive move into directing with The Grinch.
The Illumination Entertainment film grossed more than $512 million at box offices worldwide. Directing a machine this large requires a discipline that Mosier refined for years in the editing room. After all, the pacing of an animated comedy is decided in the edit long before the final rendering process.
He wasn't seeking the fame of a star director.
He preferred to return to his editing career on projects of major technical scale. In 2023, he worked on the editing of the series The Last of Us for HBO. His work on the first episode helped set the visual tone of one of the most profitable adaptations of the decade. Mosier takes a dry approach here and avoids unnecessary embellishment so the narrative moves forward smoothly.
He also served as executive producer on The Muppets Mayhem in 2023. On this project, he brought back the spirit of physical comedy he had practiced early on, but with the resources of a major platform. The industry now sees him as a craftsman capable of bringing coherence to productions with suffocating post-production schedules.
In 2024, his name remained tied to projects where visual storytelling takes precedence over empty spectacle. The final edit of the first season of The Last of Us came with a per-episode cost that exceeded 10 million dollars.
