Chris Rock didn't start at the top. In 1984, he spent his nights at the Catch a Rising Star club in New York, waiting for an opportunity that never seemed to come. Eddie Murphy saw him perform one night and decided that this skinny kid had something the others didn't.
That encounter won him his first role in Beverly Hills Cop II.
He was on Saturday Night Live between 1990 and 1993, but never really fit the sketch format. He felt constrained by other people's scripts and by a structure that didn't allow for his rapid-fire verbal style. So he decided to return to the stage to say what he really thought about race and politics in the United States.
In 1996, he premiered Bring the Pain on HBO. It was a cultural earthquake that won him two Emmy Awards and put him in the company of monologue legends. Rock talked about the divide between social classes within the Black community with an aggression that unsettled and fascinated audiences in equal measure.
Sold millions of copies of his specials and became the sharpest voice in commercial stand-up. But movies remained unfinished business he never quite cracked. He appeared in action films such as Lethal Weapon 4 in 1998 and voiced the zebra Marty in the animated Madagascar franchise starting in 2005.
The money was coming in, but critical respect in Hollywood was another story.
He wrote and directed Top Five in 2014 to show he could tell complex stories beyond the quick joke. The film received applause at the Toronto International Film Festival and revealed a much more vulnerable side of the comedian. In 2021, he tried to change gears with Spiral, an installment of the Saw horror franchise that he produced and starred in.
But audiences always came back to him for his ability to dissect reality from a microphone. His world tours became massive events where tickets sold out in minutes. Rock understood early on that his power didn't lie in special effects but in his ability to put into words the anger of a generation.
The 2022 Oscars ceremony is remembered for the physical incident with Will Smith on stage. Rock kept his composure and did not press charges against the actor after the blow. A year later, in 2023, he used his Netflix live special titled Selective Outrage to respond to what had happened with humor in front of a global audience.
In 2023, he played activist Bayard Rustin in the film Rustin, produced by the Obamas. It was a supporting dramatic role that aimed to move him definitively away from the sketch comedian label. He signed a contract to direct a biopic about Martin Luther King Jr. produced by Steven Spielberg.
Universal Pictures announced in 2024 that Rock would handle the adaptation of the biography written by author Jonathan Eig.
