Synopsis of Everybody Hates Chris

Set in the 1980s, the series follows the everyday life of Chris, a teenager growing up in Bedford-Stuyvesant, a working-class neighborhood in the Brooklyn borough of New York City. He is one of the few normal people in his surroundings, surrounded by a gallery of eccentric figures who, in his view, act as if they don't appreciate him. His mother forces him to attend a predominantly white school across the city, which confronts him with a world unlike his own. Created by Chris Rock and Ali LeRoi, the comedy airs on UPN and stars Tyler James Williams as Chris. Rock, who also narrates the story, revisits his own teenage years through it and uses his alter ego to observe the people around him.

Trivia about Everybody Hates Chris

Chris Rock grew up with a boy named Kenny Montero, whom he has cited as the inspiration for many of the episodes.

The title is a parody of Everybody Loves Raymond, the CBS sitcom that serves as the reference for the series' name.

The series was originally developed for Fox, but it ended up moving to UPN, the network that premiered it.

A Kazakh sitcom, Ata-Ana, Bala-Şağa, is based on this series, although the family moves to Almaty instead of Bedford-Stuyvesant.

The series won an NAACP Image Award for its writing in 2008 and was nominated for a Golden Globe and an Emmy.

Comedy Central has ordered the animated sequel "Everybody Still Hates Chris," with Chris Rock as narrator and executive producer, and Terry Crews and Tichina Arnold reprising their roles; Tyler James Williams will not return.

The animated version will feature Tim Johnson Jr. as young Chris, along with Ozioma Akagha as Tonya, Terrence Little Gardenhigh as Drew, and Gunnar Sizemore as Greg.
