Cedric Antonio Kyles wasn't born with a microphone in his hand. Before becoming Cedric the Entertainer, he spent his mornings in a State Farm Insurance office in St. Louis, handling claims and reviewing accident policies. It was a dull job that paid the bills but didn't feed the stage hunger he had felt since childhood in Missouri.
In 1989, he decided that jokes in the company cafeteria weren't enough. He won a local comedy contest and realized humor could be a profitable career if he took it seriously. And that's how he left the insurance world for good.
That reckoning with his own destiny was the beginning of everything.
Television was his first real springboard. His time on Def Comedy Jam and hosting ComicView in 1994 gave him the visibility he needed to move into scripted acting. But it was his role as Cedric Jackie Robinson on The Steve Harvey Show that gave him a steady paycheck and a face the general public recognized over six straight seasons.
Then came 2000. Spike Lee put a camera in front of four Black comedians and shot The Original Kings of Comedy. The film grossed 38 million dollars on a minimal budget and changed the game for live comedy in the United States. Cedric wasn't the loudest of the group, but he was the most technical on stage.
In 2002, he played Eddie in Barbershop. The role was controversial because of his jokes about Rosa Parks, which nearly led to an organized boycott, but the movie was a box office hit. Audiences connected with this grumpy old man who said what nobody dared to say out loud in a Chicago barbershop.
His film career was filled with supporting roles in major productions such as Cruel Intentions or the animated saga Madagascar, where he voiced the lemur Maurice. Cedric soon understood that in Hollywood it's better to be a premium supporting player than a forgotten lead.
But Cedric always preferred having full control.
He founded his own production company, A Bird and a Bear Entertainment, so he could stop waiting for calls from the major Los Angeles studios. In 2018, he took back control of broadcast television with The Neighborhood. The CBS series was designed to tackle racial prejudice through the direct humor of a traditional sitcom, and it worked from the very first episode.
In 2021, he hosted the Emmy Awards in a ceremony shaped by global COVID-19 restrictions. The show drew a live audience of 7.4 million viewers. He's someone who knows the business and understands that laughter is a precision industry that takes more work than inspiration.

In 2023, he published his first novel, Flipping Tip. The book explores the world of business and loyalty on the streets of St. Louis within the structure of a crime thriller. The publishing contract was closed for a six-figure sum before the manuscript was finished.
Production on the seventh season of The Neighborhood was scheduled for 2024, with a cost of more than two million dollars per episode.
