Dante Hicks works at the Quick Stop convenience store in Leonardo, New Jersey. It's his day off, but his boss asks him to cover a coworker's morning shift. Dante had planned to play a hockey game with his friends and only agrees if he can leave at noon. When he arrives, he finds the metal shutters stuck, because someone has put gum in the locks. To let customers know, he hangs a sheet over them with a sign written in shoe polish. As he keeps complaining that he shouldn't be there that day, his friend Randal Graves, a slacker, shows up at the video store next door. Kevin Smith directs the film and wrote the script, and Brian O'Halloran plays Dante.

Trivia about Clerks

Miramax, which bought the distribution rights after its run at Sundance, believed Jay had no commercial appeal and would scare audiences away rather than draw them in.

The MPAA initially gave it an NC-17 rating based solely on its explicit dialogue, even though the film contains no clear sex or nudity.

Walt Flanagan, a friend of Smith, plays four roles in the film. Smith didn't plan on him having that many, but the hired actors didn't show up.

The film was screened in 1993 to an empty theater on the last day of the Independent Feature Film Market in New York, until Bob Hawk rescued it.

Filming took place at night at Leonardo, New Jersey's Quick Stop, where Smith worked as a clerk during the day.

The film shared the Filmmakers Trophy at Sundance and later won two awards at Cannes, in the International Critics' Week section.

In 2024, it returned to select Cineplex theaters on October 18 and 19, as part of the celebrations for its 30th anniversary.

Quotes by Clerks

I'm not even supposed to be here today.
Hey, I'm a firm believer in the philosophy of a ruling class, especially since I rule.
Female Customer: It's important to have a job that makes a difference, boys. That's why I manually masturbate caged animals for artificial insemination.
Hey, try not to suck any dick on your way through the parking lot!
I like to think I'm a master of my own destiny.
Yeah, I mean aside from the cheating, we were a great couple. I mean, that's what high school was about: algebra, bad lunch, and infidelity.
