Bethany works at an abortion clinic and is going through a serious crisis of faith. Her routine changes when she receives an assignment she didn't expect: stopping two fallen angels from returning to heaven. Bartleby and Loki were banished to Wisconsin by God and now look for a way back home. A newspaper ad offers them an unexpected opening: a plenary indulgence they could obtain at a Catholic church in New Jersey. Bethany has to act before the angels make their move, even though her own faith is in doubt. Kevin Smith directs the film, with Ben Affleck and Matt Damon in the cast.

Trivia about Dogma

In an early draft of Dogma, the lead was a stripper named Bethany who met Jay and Silent Bob in a strip club booth.
During the filming of Mallrats, Smith rewrote the script and added an orangutan for Jay and Silent Bob. On 1996 he cut it and reshaped Bethany so that Joey Lauren Adams could play her.
Smith offered the role of Bethany to Gillian Anderson, but according to him, the actress replied that she really hated him.
A deleted scene pitted Silent Bob against the Golgothan in a hospital. Test audiences said there was too much Golgothan, so it was cut because the film was already running over two hours.

Quotes by Dogma

  • No pleasure, no rapture, no exquisite sin greater... than central air.
  • As I was saying - prior to your firefighting episode - I am... the Metatron. [Bethany stares blankly.] Don't tell me the name doesn't ring a bell. [She continues staring blankly.] You people! If there isn't a movie about it, it's not worth knowing, is it?
  • So you were an artist? Big deal. Elvis was an artist, but that didn't stop him from joining the service in time of war. That's why he's the King, and you're a schmuck.
  • PA Announcer: [at St. Michael's hospital] I repeat: this is not a drill. This is the Apocalypse. Please exit the hospital in an orderly fashion. Thank you. l repeat.
  • (Last words) But l'm a fucking demon.
  • Tell a person that you're the Metatron, and they stare at you blankly. Mention something out of a Charlton Heston movie and suddenly everybody's a theology scholar! May I continue uninterrupted?
