Alanis Morissette landed in Los Angeles with a demo recorded alongside Glen Ballard and an anger the industry didn't expect. She was 1995. Her album Jagged Little Pill sold 33 million copies at a time when female rock was still viewed with suspicion on commercial radio.
Nobody expected that tone.
Before that, she was a child star in Canada. In 1986, she appeared on the sketch comedy show You Can’t Do That on Television and recorded danceable pop songs that she now prefers to forget. Those were the years of Alanis and Now Is the Time, two albums that only found success within her home country's borders.
That international flop was her greatest asset.
Morissette needed to break free from her image as a obedient teen to find her own voice. In 1994 she moved to Toronto and then to California to write about rejection and anxiety. The result was a raw sound that connected with a generation tired of the plastic optimism of the previous decade.
Kevin Smith cast her to play God in Dogma in 1999. She had no lines because her voice (according to the film's plot) could destroy the universe. It was a casting choice that perfectly captured her status at the peak of her exposure.
But her relationship with the screen has always been on and off. In 2006, she joined the series Nip/Tuck, and later had an eight-episode arc on Weeds playing a doctor. She never chased Hollywood stardom, but she always accepted roles that played with her mystical or unpredictable image.
Music was still paying the bills.
In 2018, she premiered the musical based on her songs at the American Repertory Theater. The show moved to Broadway in 2019 and earned 15 Tony Award nominations. The story was not about her life, but Ballard and Morissette's lyrics were used to articulate a drama about addiction and trauma in American suburbs.
In 2021, the documentary Jagged premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival. She withdrew from the promotion before its release, disagreeing with the final cut by director Alison Klayman. She claimed the film was reductive and did not reflect her truth.
That same year, she began voicing a character in the animated series The Great North.
During 2022, she released The Storm Before the Calm. It's a meditation and ambient sound album that moves completely away from the distorted guitars of her youth. The artist who screamed in the '90s decided that silence and low frequencies were her new creative priority.
In 2025, her publishing catalog was valued as one of the most profitable assets of the 1990s. Her distribution deal with Primary Wave has managed the rights to her biggest hits since 2022.
