Salma Hayek

Salma Hayek landed in Los Angeles in 1991 without speaking English fluently. She was 24 years old and already the most famous actress in Mexico thanks to the telenovela Teresa. But in Hollywood they treated her like just another extra.

Nobody in Hollywood was expecting her.

In Mexico, she was an absolute star, and crowds gathered in the streets just to see her. But at California auditions, she was told her accent limited her to maid or gangster's girlfriend roles. That period of rejection lasted nearly four years.

Then Robert Rodriguez came along. The director saw her in a local TV interview and knew she had something special. In 1995, she premiered Desperado alongside Antonio Banderas, and American audiences discovered a new force on screen.

Taking on the Major Studios

For years she fought to get a biopic of Frida Kahlo off the ground. Major studios didn't see a film about a Mexican communist painter with a physique outside conventional standards as profitable. So she founded her own production company (Ventanarosa) to take control of the project.

Frida was her great personal battle.

In 2002, Frida premiered after she overcame the obstacles Harvey Weinstein placed in the production. The film grossed 56 million dollars worldwide and earned her first Oscar nomination for Best Actress. And the bet paid off.

Because she didn't want to be just a supporting actress in lightweight comedies. In 2006, she produced the series Ugly Betty for ABC and proved she had a knack for television business. The project won several Golden Globes and aired for four seasons.

Business and Big Budgets

In 2009, she married businessman François-Henri Pinault in Venice. But her career didn't stop when she joined one of the wealthiest families in the world. She kept working on a wide range of projects, from pure comedy to the darkest drama.

In 2021, she appeared in Marvel's Eternals and in House of Gucci by Ridley Scott. That year was one of the most intense in her career given the scale of the productions. But she always kept control over her public image.

And she did it on her own terms.

In 2023, she starred in an episode of Black Mirror in which she played a parody of herself. The episode explored the dangers of artificial intelligence and the use of actors' likenesses through abusive contracts. Critics gave positive reviews to her ability to laugh at her own fame.

In 2024, she finished filming Without Blood in Italy. The film is based on the novel by Alessandro Baricco and is directed by Angelina Jolie. The entire production was shot at the Cinecittà Studios in Rome.
