Mía Maestro wasn't seeking international fame when Carlos Saura discovered her in a Buenos Aires theater. It was 1998, and the young actress was only thinking about dance and classical acting. But the release of Tango changed her reality overnight.
The film was an Oscar contender. And she, barely twenty years old, found herself walking red carpets she hadn't even imagined months earlier. She didn't stay in Argentina waiting for a call that would repeat that success. She moved to Berlin to keep training and then made the leap to Los Angeles.
It wasn't a planned decision.
In 2002, she played Cristina Kahlo in Frida. Salma Hayek personally chose her for the role after seeing her earlier work. It was a complex shoot, but it grossed more than $56 million worldwide. It opened the door to major studios without her losing the essence of a classically trained actress.
In 2004, she shot The Motorcycle Diaries under the direction of Walter Salles. She played Chichina Ferreyra and shared the screen with Gael García Bernal. The film earned critical acclaim at Cannes and established her name in the American industry as a reliable choice for stories with political and social weight.
J.J. Abrams called her to join AKA in 2004. She came in for the fourth season to bring Nadia Santos to life. The pace of American television was frantic and very different from the European auteur cinema she had frequented. But she accepted the challenge because the character had a physical depth that allowed her to use her dance skills.
But Hollywood has its own rules.
During that period, she balanced television with smaller, experimental projects. She never let big productions take over her time completely. In 2006, she took part in the remake of Poseidon. It was a blockbuster with a $160 million budget that did not achieve the box office results everyone expected.
Music came later.
In 2014, she released her debut studio album, titled Si Agua. She recorded it in Iceland with the collaboration of Valgeir Sigurðsson. It was a personal project, far from the commercial circuit, in which she explored ambient sounds and intimate lyrics. That same year she began her journey on The Strain, Guillermo del Toro's series, where she played Dr. Nora Martínez until 2017.
After years alternating between productions in Argentina and the United States, Mía Maestro kept a selective profile. In 2020, she starred in El silencio del cazador alongside Pablo Echarri. For this role, she won the Best Actress award at the Málaga Film Festival (Official Selection). It was a reminder that her dramatic power remained intact outside the California studio system.
In 2022, she joined the cast of Echo 3 for Apple TV+. The series was shot mainly on location in Colombia and required intense physical training for the jungle scenes. Because Mía prefers shoots that demand real physical effort over comfortable work on a green screen set.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2024, she played Sister Silvia in the film The First Omen. The shoot took place in Rome and marked her return to large-scale psychological horror. The production used real locations at Villa Parisi in Frascati to recreate the oppressive atmosphere of the orphanage where the main plot unfolds.
The film's final budget reached about $30 million. Production designer Eve Stewart focused on a bold 1970s aesthetic to visually connect with the original 1976 film.
