Anthony Edwards doesn't look like an action star, and maybe that's why he worked so well in Top Gun. In 1986 audiences needed someone ordinary to relate to the tough guys flying fighter jets at absurd speeds. His Goose was the perfect counterpoint to Tom Cruise's ego.
But what few know is that before that role, he had already shot Revenge of the Nerds in 1984. That rowdy comedy gave him the stage experience he needed so he wouldn't be overshadowed by the pilots' sunglasses. Edwards quickly understood that his place in the industry was in closeness, not muscle.
Then came the death of his character.
That sea sequence changed how audiences saw him and opened the doors of prestige television. In 1994, he accepted a role in an NBC medical drama that few expected would become a global phenomenon. Playing Mark Greene in ER earned him a Golden Globe and four consecutive Emmy nominations.
For eight seasons, he was the heart of the hallways at County General in Chicago. The contract he signed in 1998 reached $35 million for three years of work. It was an astronomical figure for late-1990s television that made him the highest-paid actor on the small screen.
Edwards decided to leave the series in 2002 for personal reasons. He wanted to watch his children grow up and explore directing and producing away from the constant spotlight. So he stepped away from the twelve-hour daily shoots and sought projects that would let him keep a low profile.
In 2007, David Fincher cast him in Zodiac. There, he played Inspector Bill Armstrong with a restraint reminiscent of the finest character actors of the 1970s. He didn't need to shout for viewers to feel the weight of exhaustion in the hunt for a serial killer.
He has never gone after magazine covers.
Because Edwards has always preferred technical precision to personal showmanship. In 2022, he took part in the miniseries Inventing Anna, playing the lawyer Alan Reed. His ability to portray men of integrity caught up in shady situations remains his greatest asset decades after his start.
But his life took a curious turn in 2021 when he secretly married actress Mare Winningham. The two had known each other for nearly forty years and had worked together on Miracle Mile in 1988. The news surprised the industry because of the absolute discretion with which they handled their relationship.
In 2022, he appeared briefly on the big screen again through archive footage in Top Gun: Maverick. Although he didn't shoot new scenes, his presence was the emotional engine of a film that grossed more than $1,400 million worldwide. Audiences still remembered Goose almost four decades later.
In 2024, he was confirmed to join the cast for the second season of The Walking Dead: Dead City. Filming for this AMC production took place mainly in New Jersey, with an estimated budget of $72 million per season.
