Linda Cardellini did not set out to be a movie star when she started working in 1996. Her first major role came in 1999 with the series Freaks and Geeks. That Judd Apatow production lasted only one season but defined the style of an entire generation of actors. She played Lindsay Weir, a brilliant student trying to fit in with the rebels at her school.
The series was canceled prematurely.
Cardellini had to make her own way in early-2000s Hollywood. In 2002, she agreed to put on Velma Dinkley's glasses in the adaptation of Scooby-Doo. The project was a worldwide box office hit that grossed 275 million dollars and gave her a level of commercial visibility she hadn't expected. But she wanted more than family films.
She joined the medical drama ER in 2003 to play nurse Samantha Taggart. She stayed for six seasons, until the show ended in 2009. It was her first steady paycheck and the place where she learned to handle the frantic pace of network television. Shooting twenty-two episodes a year demands a physical stamina that few actors can sustain.
But critical recognition came with a supporting role in 2013. She played Sylvia Rosen in the sixth season of Mad Men. That secret affair with Don Draper earned her first Emmy nomination as a guest actress. It was a quiet performance in which Cardellini showed she could hold her own against the industry's heavyweights.
And then came the black comedy phenomenon.
In 2015, she signed with Netflix to star in Bloodline. The series explored the secrets of a family in the Florida Keys, and she played Meg Rayburn, the lawyer trying to keep the peace. Filming was tough because of the swampy weather conditions and the emotional intensity of the scripts. The production ended in 2017 after three seasons of family intrigue.
Between 2019 and 2022, she starred in Dead to Me alongside Christina Applegate. Her character was Judy Hale, an optimistic woman with a dark secret tied to a fatal hit-and-run. For this role she received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series in 2020. It was her most personal project to date.
Cardellini has also been part of the Marvel Studios machine. In 2015, she first appeared as Laura Barton in Avengers: Age of Ultron. She reprised the role in Avengers: Endgame in 2019 and in the series Hawkeye in 2021. As a result, her face is familiar to millions of people who don't even know her real name.
The actress has always preferred to keep a low profile off set.
In 2023, she voiced the otter Lylla in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. It was a motion-capture role that James Gunn personally oversaw for months. Cardellini recorded her lines in a sound booth in Los Angeles while animators adjusted the animal's movements to match her voice. In 2023, the film wrapped up its box office run with 845 million dollars in worldwide earnings.
