Gloria Reuben arrived on the set of ER in 1995 without knowing that her contract for a few episodes would stretch across five years. The Canadian actress played Jeanie Boulet, a medical assistant who soon carried the weight of an unprecedented storyline on commercial television. In 1996, her character received a positive HIV diagnosis, and the storyline changed completely.
Reuben insisted that the illness not be treated as a one-week tearjerker device. She wanted to show the daily routine of medication and the stigma at work. That decision earned her two consecutive Emmy nominations. But success in scripted television wasn't enough to curb her other ambitions.
In 1999, she decided to leave the most-watched series in the world.
Many agents in Los Angeles thought it was career suicide. Reuben chose to trade her stethoscope for a microphone and went on tour around the world with Tina Turner. She spent months singing backup for the rock legend. That experience reaffirmed her identity as a musician before she was a red carpet celebrity.
After her music years, she returned to the screen with a much more selective run of roles. In 2012, Steven Spielberg cast her to play Elizabeth Keckley in the film Lincoln. She worked side by side with Daniel Day-Lewis to bring to life the confidante and seamstress of the First Lady. The shoot required deep historical research into slavery and fashion in the nineteenth century.
And the effort was worth it.
Soon after, she dove into the world of mental health with Mr. Robot. Between 2015 and 2019, she brought Krista Gordon to life, the therapist trying to decode the fractured mind of a hacker. In this USA Network production, she showed she could sustain dramatic tension through just her gaze and silence. The scenes were often shot in enclosed spaces to make viewers feel suffocated.
She was looking for projects where authority and vulnerability mixed in uncomfortable ways. That's why she accepted the role of Eloise Hastie in the series City on a Hill during 2019. There, she explored corruption and systemic racism in 1990s Boston. But Gloria Reuben never set aside her work as a writer and environmental activist.
In 2020, she published her memoir under the title My Life as a Woman of Color in ER: A Memoir. The book details the tensions of being a Black woman in an industry that still didn't know how to handle real diversity. She didn't hold back on the technical hardships of grueling shoots at Warner Bros. studios.
In 2022, she took part in the new version of Ojos de fuego, based on the novel by Stephen King. She played Captain Hollister in a production that met a cold reception at the box office. Despite the numbers, Reuben's work was one of the few things the specialized fantasy genre press singled out for praise. The film barely earned 15 million dollars worldwide during its theatrical run.
In 2024, she joined the cast of the series Elsbeth to play Claudia Payne. Filming of her scenes focused on outdoor locations in New York under very strict production protocols.
The actress maintains her residence on the East Coast and balances acting with her role as president of the Waterkeeper Alliance. In the last fiscal year, the organization managed a budget of more than ten million dollars for watershed protection.
