Bella Ramsey was eleven years old when she first stepped onto a professional set, and she needed only five minutes on screen to outshine actors with decades of stage experience. The HBO production was looking for an aristocratic girl who could hold her own against warlords in the North of Westeros. Nobody on the team wanted a docile child reciting lines learned by heart. They found a defiant gaze and a dry delivery at an acting school in Nottingham.

That audition for Game of Thrones in 2016 completely changed the course of her studies. She didn't come from a family of performers, nor did she have connections in the British industry. Her breakout as Lyanna Mormont generated millions of social media interactions within hours, prompting the writers to rewrite the following seasons to give her a greater military role in the plot.

No one expected such an impact from just ten minutes of screen time.

The Price of Child Stardom

The industry didn't wait for her to turn fifteen. In 2017, she took the lead role in the series The Worst Witch for the CBBC channel. Shooting children's productions means grueling workdays under strict labor regulations, and the physical toll began to show after three consecutive seasons of filming.

In 2020, she decided to leave the series before filming the fourth season to prioritize her mental health and recover from an eating disorder. That decision broke the unwritten rule that pushes young stars to squeeze every contract to the bone. Few performers at that age dare to cancel a hit contract on British public television.

She preferred to retreat into voice work. Between 2018 and 2023, she voiced the fearless lead of the animated series Hilda for Netflix. That booth work let her develop her vocal range away from cameras and makeup lights.

But anonymity didn't last long.

The Algorithm Trenches

When Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin announced the cast for the The Last of Us adaptation in 2021, the internet reacted with fierce hostility. Tens of thousands of profiles attacked the casting, claiming Ramsey didn't physically resemble Ellie from the original video game. The production team therefore shielded the actor during the twelve months of filming in Calgary to protect her from online harassment.

He accepted the role without ever having touched a console in his life.

Mazin explicitly forbade her from playing the PlayStation title so she wouldn't imitate its virtual gestures. The strategy paid off when the premiere on 2023 drew 4.7 million viewers on its first night, a figure that shattered the platform's usual records and silenced any doubts about her dramatic range.

Her on-screen chemistry with Pedro Pascal powered the story. Her restrained pain and bursts of teenage rage earned her Emmy and Golden Globe nominations, as she went head to head with veterans of the international scene.

In 2024, she returned to Vancouver to shoot the show's second season, which aired in 2025 amid enormous anticipation. The new episodes demanded grueling physical preparation, including firearms training and hand-to-hand combat choreography.

Creative Control

Alongside big American productions, Ramsey deliberately pursued independent projects on British soil. In 2022, she starred in Catherine Called Birdy under the direction of Lena Dunham, sidestepping the traditional period film mold with a sharp comedy set in the 13th century. A year later, she took a supporting role in the second season of the BBC prison drama Time, playing a pregnant, drug-addicted inmate.

In 2023, she publicly came out as non-binary and genderfluid. The news sparked administrative debates within British awards committees over how to categorize her acting nominations, but Ramsey ended the controversy by refusing to withdraw from traditional categories to avoid bureaucratic disputes.

In 2026, she premiered the dramedy Sunny Dancer, directed by George Jaques, and wrapped filming on the thriller series Maya for Channel 4 alongside Daisy Haggard. Ramsey made it a condition for her future projects that she only direct scripts she had written herself. Filming on Maya wrapped in Glasgow after seven weeks of location shooting and a locked budget of eight million pounds.

She has served as a young patron of Bamboozle, a charity that creates theater for children with profound learning disabilities.
In 2023, she publicly came out as non-binary and later explained that she does not consider herself "100 percent heterosexual."

Quotes by Bella Ramsey

  • Buzzing to be baptised tonight!! My faith is such a massive part of my life and so now I’m ready to be dunked (yep it’s a full immersion baptism) and say publicly that Jesus is my Saviour.
  • I seriously considered that maybe I don’t want to be famous so I’m not going to do this show [The Last of Us] because it’s going propel me to a place I don’t want to go to in terms of being seen and being known. I like to blend in and hide.
  • It’s only recently that I’ve accepted I am Ellie, and I can do it, and I am a good actor. But this will last for a few weeks and then I’ll think I’m terrible again. That’s just the process.
