Joel Fry isn't the type of actor who seeks the spotlight on every red carpet. He trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London and came out with the technical skills that let him move between genres without making a fuss. His commercial film debut came in 2008 with 10,000 BC.
It was a modest start under the direction of Roland Emmerich.
But Fry's real playing field in his early years was British television. He appeared in comedies such as Twenty Twelve and White Van Man, where he learned to handle comic timing with almost mathematical precision. Seven episodes were enough for casting directors to start seeing something more in him than just a supporting player.
In 2013 he landed the role of Stylax in the series Plebs. The show became a cult phenomenon in the UK and gave him the freedom to explore characters with a mix of awkwardness and charisma. Fry decided to leave the series after three seasons to pursue projects that demanded a range beyond easy laughs.
Fry's chance to break into the global market came in 2014 when he joined the cast of Game of Thrones. He played Hizdahr zo Loraq in the fourth and fifth seasons of the HBO series. His face went from small sitcoms to one of the most expensive productions in television history.
And the jump in scale didn't affect him in the least.
After his time in Westeros, the actor returned to more contained projects with greater dramatic weight. In 2019 he played Rocky in the film Yesterday directed by Danny Boyle. It was a key role because it showed he could carry the emotional weight of a commercial plot without losing the everyday-guy quality that makes him so believable on camera.
In 2021 Disney recruited him to play Jasper in Cruella. He shared the screen with Emma Stone and Paul Walter Hauser in a production that grossed more than 230 million dollars worldwide. His portrayal of one of the villainess's classic henchmen dropped the original caricature to give him a far more human and pragmatic backstory.
Fry didn't settle for the big budgets of California studios. In 2021 he starred in In the Earth, a psychological horror film directed by Ben Wheatley that was shot in just fifteen days during the global pandemic restrictions. It's a raw work that demanded considerable physical endurance from the actor in the middle of an English forest.
Because independent film is where Fry usually finds his best nuances.
In 2023 he led the cast of The Bank of Dave, a film based on true events about a businessman who tries to open a local bank in Burnley. The movie became one of the most-watched titles on digital platforms in the UK during its release month. Fry plays a London lawyer who must connect with the reality of a working-class community in northern England.
That same year, he appeared in The End We Start From alongside Jodie Comer. Filming of this environmental survival drama took place at various locations in London and on the Scottish coast under the direction of Mahalia Belo. The production had an estimated budget of 9 million pounds to recreate a massive flood crisis.
