The legend. The battle. The first hero.

In the Ural Mountains lives a tribe of hunter-gatherers who feed on woolly mammoths. The migrations of these animals are becoming increasingly scarce, and the future of the group is uncertain. One day a blue-eyed girl, rescued from another tribe, arrives at the camp. The tribe's shaman, whom everyone calls the Great Mother, insists that the scarcity will end when a young hunter captures a manak and marries the newcomer. However, the shaman also prophesies that four-legged demons will come for them after the last mammoth hunt. Steven Strait plays D'Leh, the young hunter on whom the tribe's hopes rest.

Trivia about 10,000 BC

Filming lasted 102 days, 20 more than originally planned. The production moved through South Africa, Namibia and New Zealand to complete the scenes.

To shorten rendering times, which took up to sixteen hours per frame, 50% of the fur was removed from the CGI animal models.

The mammoths were based on elephants and mammoth fossils, while the saber-toothed tiger was inspired by tigers and ligers, a hybrid of a lion and a tiger.

Emmerich ruled out casting well-known actors, because he felt they would distract from the realism of the prehistoric setting. Casting unknown actors also helped keep the budget under control.

Dialect coach Brendan Gunn was hired to create six invented languages. Gunn improvised their sound informally alongside Steven Strait.

It was the first 2008 movie to surpass 200 million dollars at the box office, according to the article on its earnings.

To play D'Leh, Steven Strait lost more than 13.6 kilos of muscle through diet and training, after having bulked up for an earlier movie.

Emmerich cut two or three early scenes featuring the saber-toothed tiger; during filming, camera operators guided shots using a blue silhouette of the animal in Namibia.
