Nico Parker was born in London during the winter of 2004, surrounded by scripts and cameras. She is the daughter of actress Thandiwe Newton and director Ol Parker. But her entry into the industry was not a slow process of assimilation through supporting roles on British television.
In 2019, she made her big-screen debut directly under the direction of Tim Burton. That version of Dumbo required her to hold her gaze on a digital elephant while sharing the set with Colin Farrell. Critics praised her restrained emotional expression in a production with a budget of nearly $170 million.
Good genes don't always guarantee talent.
Many expected her career to follow the easy path of youth-driven blockbusters. But Parker chose to slow down and pick projects with more dramatic weight. In 2020, she appeared in the miniseries The Third Day alongside Jude Law. There, she explored a psychological horror atmosphere that had little to do with Disney's family-friendly films.
In 2021, she worked on Reminiscence under Lisa Joy. She shared the cast with her own mother in a dark sci-fi plot that didn't perform well at the box office. That commercial stumble didn't hurt her reputation in the Los Angeles casting offices.
And then came the fungus.
In 2023, she played Sarah Miller in the first episode of The Last of Us for HBO. She needed only half an hour of screen time for audiences to forget her famous lineage. Her portrayal of Joel's daughter during the collapse of civilization was the emotional engine of the entire first season.
The production demanded filming in extreme weather conditions in Canada during 2021 and 2022. Her on-screen death became the anchor point of Pedro Pascal's storyline. Her impact was therefore out of proportion to the time she actually spent in front of the camera.
Parker didn't try to extend the media buzz around the series with empty interviews. She preferred to return to independent film to seek out roles that would let her move away from the young-promise label.
In 2024, she starred in Suncoast under the direction of Laura Chinn. The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and earned her the breakthrough performance award. In this semi-autobiographical drama, she plays a teenager who looks after her sick brother while forming a friendship with an activist played by Woody Harrelson.
The project marked her first major leading role. The industry watched how Parker carried a small film with no visual effects to lean on. She won the Special Jury Award at Sundance for her ability to convey anticipatory grief without falling into easy sentimentality.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2025, she took on the challenge of playing Astrid in the live-action version of How to Train Your Dragon. Filming took place in locations across Northern Ireland under the direction of Dean DeBlois. This Universal Pictures production marks her return to big commercial franchises, with a release scheduled for June 13, 2025.
The production had an estimated budget of $150 million and used state-of-the-art motion capture technology.
