Ol Parker was born in London in 1969. His entry into the industry was neither flashy nor driven by the acclaim of experimental critics, because his interest was always in the structure of well-crafted commercial screenplays. He began writing for television in the late nineties, but his name didn't start turning heads in production offices until 2005.
In 2005, he made his directing debut with Imagine Me & You.
It was a small romantic comedy that performed better in the domestic market than in theaters. Parker was not after epic scope but the intimacy of fast-paced dialogue. In 2011, he wrote the screenplay for The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, and that is when the industry realized he knew how to handle casts of veteran actors with a mix of humor and melancholy. The film grossed 136 million dollars on a budget of just 10 million.
That profitability opened the doors of major American studios for him.
In 2018, he was handed the keys to one of Universal Pictures' most profitable franchises. Directing Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again posed a technical and narrative challenge, because it had to work as both a prequel and a sequel at the same time. Parker agreed to take on the job on the condition that he could rewrite the script to give the character of Donna a more melancholy feel.
He shot much of the film on the island of Vis in Croatia.
The result was a burst of color that topped 395 million dollars at the global box office. Parker showed that he could manage big budgets without losing the intimate tone of the characters. But not everything was easy on set. Coordinating the schedules of Meryl Streep and Cher required a production logistics effort that forced key scenes to be shot in record time so insurance costs wouldn't skyrocket.
In 2022, he returned with Ticket to Paradise. The film brought Julia Roberts and George Clooney together in Bali, although it was actually shot in Queensland, Australia, due to health restrictions of the time. The script aimed to revive the classic romantic comedy of the 1990s without pretending to reinvent the genre.
Parker wrote the lead role with Clooney specifically in mind.
The production cost 60 million dollars and managed to bring adult audiences back to movie theaters at a time of uncertainty for the industry. In late 2024, his involvement as screenwriter on the adaptation of The Thursday Murder Club for Netflix was confirmed. Filming on this project began in June 2024 under the direction of Chris Columbus.
The film has an estimated production budget of 100 million pounds sterling.
